Penn State outside linebacker Tony Rojas will be out with a long-term injury, Blue-White Illustrated reported Wednesday.
The 6-2, 230-pound Rojas is a junior who’s in his second season as a starter, this year alongside Amare Campbell.
Rojas ranks second on the team behind Campbell with 25 tackles and shares the team lead with 4.5 tackles for loss. He also has two sacks, two quarterback hurries and one pass breakup.
Rojas, Campbell and Dominic DeLuca are the three linebackers that Penn State coach James Franklin and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles have said they trust.
DeLuca likely will move into the starting lineup next to Campbell. Tony Speca, Keon Wylie and freshman Alex Tatsch are among the candidates to play more at linebacker.
The Nittany Lions also could choose to use Zion Tracy or Dejuan Lane at outside linebacker.
Last season, Rojas played through an upper-body injury, started every game and received All-Big Ten honorable mention from the coaches.
He finished with 58 tackles, six for loss, one sack, four pass breakups and three interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown against SMU in a College Football Playoff first-round game.
He underwent surgery shortly after last season and missed spring practice.
