The federal grand jury investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 election has issued subpoenas to a slew of state and county officials for their communications with Donald Trump and other figures in his orbit during his final months in office.

Officials with the office of the clerk of Dane County, Wisc., and Maricopa County, Ariz., confirmed they had received subpoenas connected to the investigation, which is now being overseen by special counsel Jack Smith. The subpoenas, which were issued last month, seek documents and communications they had with 19 people, including Trump himself.

The Washington Post first reported the wave of subpoenas.

Scott McDonnell, the clerk of Dane County, told POLITICO he had teed up some documents in response to the subpoena. He said he had only been in touch with one of the 19 figures listed on the subpoena: Trump’s Wisconsin-based election lawyer James Troupis. McDonnell said the documents he is sending to the grand jury consist primarily of already-public transcripts from the county’s recount proceedings in 2020.

“We’re sending stuff to them today,” McDonnell said.

The subpoenas are among the first to be delivered since Smith took over the investigation in mid November. He also subpoenaed Jan. 6 footage taken by filmmaker Alex Holder and his crew.

The subpoenas come amid a flurry of grand jury activity at the federal courthouse, where top aides to Trump’s White House — including former counsel Pat Cipollone and his deputy Pat Philbin — have been seen entering the sealed corridors. Other Trump aides who have arrived at the courthouse in recent days include Dan Scavino and Stephen Miller.
