Grand jury clears N.J. officer in controversial police shooting

A Paterson police officer who shot a 25-year-old man two years ago won’t face criminal charges in the death, which spurred angry protests in the state’s third-largest city.

A grand jury cleared Detective Mohammed Bashir in the Dec. 29, 2021, killing, the state Attorney General’s Office announced this week, saying the investigation showed the man was armed and had exchanged gunfire with Bashir.
