Atlanta’s Spelman College to receive $5.7 million from Simons Foundation

A foundation that promotes science and math research is giving Atlanta’s Spelman College $5.7 million.

The New York-based Simons Foundation announced the gift Wednesday to the historically Black private women’s college.

Spelman said the money will pay half the salaries of 10 new science, technology, engineering and math faculty through August 2028, letting the professors spend half their time conducting research and providing research opportunities to students.

SPELMAN COLLEGE SUSPENDS BILL COSBY PROFESSORSHIP

The National Science Foundation ranks Spelman as the top producer of Black women who go on to earn doctorates in STEM fields, and the college said it’s trying to double the number of graduates who eventually earn doctorates.

Simons Foundation President David Spergel said Spelman faculty today spend more time teaching and less time conducting research than at many other colleges, holding back faculty career development and undergraduate research exposure.

The foundation will provide up to three years of salary support to 10 faculty members to be hired over the next six years. Priority will be given to researchers in math, physics and mathematical approaches to life sciences.

Kamala Harris In High Stakes Gaffe At DMZ Hails Strong US “Alliance With Republic Of North Korea”

Kamala Harris In High Stakes Gaffe At DMZ Hails Strong US “Alliance With Republic Of North Korea”

Coming soon after Pyongyang fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea as a warning to the South and its allies on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris held a much anticipated press conference at the the Korean Peninsula’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Thursday.

Standing on the southern side of the demarcation line, opposite of which North Korean soldiers kept a close watch on the proceedings, she gave a speech hailing the “ironclad” commitment of the US to its allies in the region. But that’s when she made an unfortunate and deeply awkward gaffe touting the strong alliance with “the Republic of North Korea.”

Given the high stakes tensions which are ever-present over the peninsula, this was no small slip – coming also as the north “greeted” her visit with yet another ballistic missile launch on Thursday. “North Korea fired another suspected ballistic missile Thursday, South Korean and Japanese authorities said, marking Pyongyang’s third launch this week as it ratchets up regional tensions,” Bloomberg confirmed.

Japan’s defense ministry confirmed of Thursday’s launch that this latest missile “flew to an altitude of 50km and covered a range of 300km.”

In her speech, Harris denounced the “brutal dictatorship” of Kim Jong-un in what’s being widely called unusually blunt criticism for the fact that the remarks were made from a high US official at the DMZ. But likely the impact was softened by the aforementioned US “alliance with the Republic of North Korea” gaffe.

Oops…

The north and the south took “dramatically different paths” – she continued, with the north marked by repeat severe human rights violations.

She referenced the heavily armed border she was standing next to as a “stark reminder” of this.

The trip to the DMZ came after her meeting in Seoul with President Yoon Suk Yeol. Both denounced the latest series of missile launches, and warned Pyongyang against reported plans to conduct a nuclear test, which would be the first since 2017.

Bloomberg describes of her first visit to the DMZ, “Harris entered a hut from the South Korean side used for discussions that straddles the border with North Korea on Thursday, becoming the highest-ranking member of the Biden administration to enter the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) wide buffer where hundreds of thousands of troops are stationed on their respective sides of razor-wire fencing in a place dubbed the Cold War’s last frontier.”

Powell’s Plan Is Not Working – Initial Jobless Claims Plunge To 5-Month Lows

Powell’s Plan Is Not Working – Initial Jobless Claims Plunge To 5-Month Lows

Well this is not going to help fight inflation…

The number of Americans filing for jobless benefits for the first time dropped back below 200k last week (193k) – the lowest number since April…

Continuing Claims also fell to its lowest in 3 months.

Fed Chair Powell will not be happy that his cunning plan to fight inflation by easing the tightness in the labor market – by raising rates and crushing the economy – does not seem to be working.

Presumably this means more higher and more longer rate-hikes are to come…

Which explains why futures are tumbling.

Fox News’ Steve Harrigan reports from Florida area destroyed by Hurricane Ian: ‘Everything’s gone’

Fox News correspondent Steve Harrigan described the storm-ravaged scene in Charlotte County, Florida as “complete destruction” after Hurricane Ian swept across the state Wednesday.

Reporting live from a mobile home park in the area on “America’s Newsroom” Thursday, Harrigan walked through debris and remnants of mobile homes that sustained a direct hit from the historic storm.

“We have people here who are really dealing with complete destruction at this point,” he said.

GOV. DESANTIS SAYS MONSTER HURRICANE IS 500-YEAR FLOOD EVENT, SEARCH-AND-RESCUE OPERATIONS UNDERWAY

“One after the other, all the way down this street, down the next street, everything’s gone.”

Harrigan pointed to boats stacked on top of each other, “crushed” mobile homes and more, pointing out that those who lived in the area are grateful to be alive.

“I think there’s a semblance of gratitude… and the next few hours are going to be critical if people are trapped, if people are in here, we’ve got to see some motion,” he said.

IAN DOWNGRADED TO TROPICAL STORM AS IT MOVES NORTH AFTER SLAMMING FLORIDA AS A CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE

Multiple factors, including communication problems, fallen power lines and scattered debris are making rescue efforts difficult, he added, but first responders and the first signs of medical aid visited the area soon after.

Harrigan described those left to face the damage as “shell-shocked,” but said survivors are willing to lend a helping hand to their neighbors regardless.

He said one man he encountered said “at least I’m alive.”

“Aid from 36+ states is on the way, but in these initial hours, it is really just Floridian comforting Floridian,” he said.

Harrigan said cell phone towers were destroyed and he was using a satellite phone hookup that he hadn’t used since he broadcast from Iraq during the war.
