Cortez Masto hangs onto Nevada Senate seat

Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, the nation’s first Latina senator, won a second term representing Nevada in a hard-fought contest against the state’s former attorney general, Adam Laxalt.

Cortez Masto, who helped flip the chamber as chair of Democrats’ Senate campaign arm in 2020, had an overwhelming fundraising advantage in the race — raising more than $45 million through late September, more than triple the roughly $13 million Laxalt brought in.

Cortez Masto faced strong headwinds throughout the race as Democrats tried to counter a nationally hostile environment centered around inflation and other economic issues. She strove to distance herself from the White House, including by opposing“,”link”:{“target”:”NEW”,”attributes”:[],”url”:”https://twitter.com/hsanchez128/status/1562550051041607682?s=20&t=M7LY_XTmQHyBgrtnrczEKQ”,”_id”:”00000184-6f2c-dce9-a7cf-7fff48f20000″,”_type”:”33ac701a-72c1-316a-a3a5-13918cf384df”},”_id”:”00000184-6f2c-dce9-a7cf-7fff48f20001″,”_type”:”02ec1f82-5e56-3b8c-af6e-6fc7c8772266″}’>including by opposing President Joe Biden’s moves to forgive student loan debt and skipping an event“,”link”:{“target”:”NEW”,”attributes”:[],”url”:”https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/vp-kamala-harris-touts-slowing-inflation-budget-bill-victory-during-las-vegas-trip”,”_id”:”00000184-6f2c-dce9-a7cf-7fff48f20002″,”_type”:”33ac701a-72c1-316a-a3a5-13918cf384df”},”_id”:”00000184-6f2c-dce9-a7cf-7fff48f20003″,”_type”:”02ec1f82-5e56-3b8c-af6e-6fc7c8772266″}’>skipping an event with Vice President Kamala Harris over the summer.

Still, Laxalt sought to tie Cortez Masto closely to Biden, calling her a “rubber-stamp senator” and framing her relationship with the president as one of “total devotion.” He also painted Democratic policies as bad for Latino-run businesses, seeking to undermine her support with a key constituency in the state, and cast doubt on her moderate bona fides by calling her a “leftist.”

Meanwhile, Laxalt — who, at one point during the campaign, called the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision “a joke” and the Supreme Court decision overturning it “historic” — had to grapple with attacks from Cortez Masto and her Democratic allies as they sought to make abortion a central issue in the campaign. Though most abortions are currently allowed in Nevada, and can only be undone by a statewide ballot vote, Laxalt said he would support a referendum that prohibits abortions after 13 weeks, with exceptions for rape, incest and life of the pregnant person.

Laxalt was also one of the leading Republicans who, in the days after the 2020 election, challenged the legitimacy of Biden’s win and alleged that “illegal votes” were cast in Nevada’s urban Clark County, including by deceased voters. The Republican secretary of state, Barbara Cegavske, found no evidence of fraud in a 2021 review.

Several Nevada Republicans threw their weight behind Cortez Masto in the race, including three former rural county commissioners, a well-known lobbyist and Reno’s chief of police. Fourteen members of Laxalt’s family“,”link”:{“target”:”NEW”,”attributes”:[],”url”:”https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/fourteen-members-of-laxalt-family-endorse-democratic-rival-cortez-masto-in-senate-race”,”_id”:”00000184-6f2c-dce9-a7cf-7fff48f20006″,”_type”:”33ac701a-72c1-316a-a3a5-13918cf384df”},”_id”:”00000184-6f2c-dce9-a7cf-7fff48f20007″,”_type”:”02ec1f82-5e56-3b8c-af6e-6fc7c8772266″}’>members of Laxalt’s family also came out in support of Cortez Masto.

Both candidates have long political legacies in the state. Cortez Masto is the daughter of Manny Cortez, who served four terms on the Clark County Commission in the ‘70s and ‘80s before going on to lead the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Laxalt, while raised in the Washington, D.C. area, is the grandson of former Nevada Gov. and Sen. Paul Laxalt and the son of former New Mexico Sen. Pete Domenici.

The loss represents the second statewide defeat in a row for Laxalt, who lost the Nevada governor’s race by 4 percentage points in 2018.

Radical climate protesters in Portugal storm building, urge economy minister to resign

Hundreds of angry climate protesters took to the streets of Lisbon on Saturday, with dozens storming a building where Portugal’s Economy Minister Antonio Costa e Silva was speaking demanding that the former oil executive resign.

Holding banners and chanting slogans, protesters demanded climate action. As some demonstrators broke into the building, those outside shouted: “Out Costa e Silva!

“It is important because we are indeed experiencing a climate crisis. The situation is serious and urgent.” climate activist Marta Leandro told Reuters. “What we do or do not do in this decade will have a great impact for climate security, for the future of new generations and current ones.”

COP27: THOUSANDS OF GLOBAL DIPLOMATS TO DESCEND UPON RITZY RESORT TOWN IN EGYPT TO SOLVE GLOBAL WARMING

Police officers dragged some protesters out of the building.

Portuguese broadcaster RTP reported the minister left the building through a back door.

The protest in Portugal took place as world leaders, policymakers and delegates from nearly 200 countries gathered at the COP27 U.N. climate summit in Egypt.

COP27: DELEGATES WEIGH ‘CLIMATE COMPENSATION’ FOR POOR NATIONS IMPACTED BY GLOBAL WARMING

But some activists do not believe COP27 will solve the problem.

“I think favoring large companies and their monetary interests has made people close their eyes to the planet, to people’s lifestyles, to people’s quality of life, to the quality of the planet.” climate protester Joao Duarte said. “I think there will be no change until governments stop being best friends and allies of the big companies. That’s why these events are so important.”

U.N. experts said in a report on Tuesday that promises by companies, banks and cities to achieve net-zero emissions often amount to little more than green washing.

“The situation is serious and urgent,” Marta Leandro, the VP of Portuguese environment group Quercus, said at the protest in Lisbon. “What we do or do not do in this decade will have a great impact on climate security.”

Nevada Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto defeats Republican Adam Laxalt in Senate race

The Fox News Decision Desk can project that Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto will keep her seat in Nevada, defeating Republican challenger Adam Laxalt. This win will also give the Democrats continued control of the Senate.

A run-off in Georgia will determine whether the Democrats will have 51 seats, or Republicans have 50 seats, forcing Vice President Harris to break ties.

Cortez Masto is a former two-term state attorney general who made history in 2016 as the first Latina elected to the Senate, as she succeeded longtime Democratic Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, who served eight years as Senate Majority Leader.

Laxalt, who succeeded Cortez Masto as state attorney general, is an Iraq War veteran, grandson of the late Nevada governor and senator Paul Laxalt, and the 2018 GOP gubernatorial nominee who narrowly lost to now-Gov. Steve Sisolak.

Laxalt, who was supported by both former President Donald Trump and longtime Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, was one of the leaders of Trump’s effort in Nevada to unsuccessfully overturn the then-president’s 202 loss in the state to now-President Biden.

In the closing stretch of this year’s general election, Laxalt gained ground after his campaign and allied Republican groups blasted Cortez Masto over the economy and inflation, and thanks in part to an increase in support among Hispanic voters.

Visualizing India’s Population Growth From 2022-2100

Visualizing India’s Population Growth From 2022-2100

For years, India has been on track to overtake China as the world’s most populated country.

In fact, we’ve covered this phenomenon in past articles, back when India was expected to overtake China’s population by the end of the decade.

However, as Visual Capitalist’s Carmen Ang notes, according to the UN’s latest population prospects, this takeover is projected to happen sooner than previously expected—as early as next year.

This graphic by Pablo Alvarez provides an up-to-date chart of India’s population growth projections compared to other countries. Projection data from Our World in Data ranges from 1800 all the way to until 2100.

Some Historical Context

For over three centuries, China has had the largest population of any country in the world.

In the 1800s, China’s population was about 322 million, which was nearly double India’s at the time. And until the mid-20th century, both countries’ populations stayed relatively stable.

However, in 1949, China’s population started to experience dramatic growth. This occurred after the Chinese Civil War when the People’s Republic of China was first established.

Around the same time, India’s population had also started to increase. Since both countries were experiencing population booms, the status quo remained the same, and China kept its position as the world’s most populated country.

China’s baby boom lasted two decades. But by the late 1970s, the Chinese government implemented a one-child policy in an attempt to slow things down and control population growth, out of fear that China was becoming overpopulated.

The plan worked—according to China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission spokesman Mao Qunan, the government’s efforts ended up reducing the number of births over the years by roughly 400 million.

China’s Population is Aging Faster Than India’s

These days, China has one of the most rapidly aging populations in the world. By 2040, it’s expected that 28% of the country’s population will be over the age of 60.

In contrast, India’s population is relatively young—half of its population is under 30, and only an eighth is over 60.

Does this mean that India’s GDP will eventually outpace China’s? Not necessarily.

As quoted in an article published in Business Standard, Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist of the Bank of Baroda says that India needs to increase its labor participation, as well as general access to education, in order to reap the benefits of its increasing working-age population.

As of 2022, India’s workforce participation rate sits at 46%, compared to China’s 68%. How will this change in the future?
