Wawa could be coming to eastern New Kent County

NEW KENT — Wawa is planning a new gas station in New Kent County while its long-delayed store in neighboring King William County is finally taking shape.

Supervisor Ron Stiers provided details of a Wawa that is likely to open next year in eastern New Kent County to the Board of Supervisors on Aug. 11.

“Wawa has submitted plans to the county for construction of a new gas station/store at the intersection of Stage Road and Highway 33, with a projected opening next March. I think the people in the eastern end of the county will certainly appreciate that,” Stiers said.

The Wawa store at the intersection of King William Road (Route 30) and the Richmond Tappahannock Highway in King William has taken longer to arrive.

It was first discussed in 2023. The site plan was approved, and the county issued a land disturbance permit in May 2024.

Two dates for the start of construction expired earlier this year, prompting social media speculation that the store had been scrapped.

However, contractors arrived on the site in late July, Planner Joyce Wolfe confirmed in an email last week.

“They have put in the foundation, plumbing groundwork, and have begun electrical groundwork. They have also buried the fuel tanks,” Wolfe said. “I do not have an estimated date of completion but would expect it to be after the first of the year, depending on the weather.”
