A South Jersey police officer was accused Monday of recording a woman while she undressed and performed a sex act in a jail cell.
Ryan Bonanni, 24, filmed multiple videos of the woman while she was in a holding cell, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s office said in a press release. He then sent the videos to friends over Snapchat, investigators said.
The incident occurred on July 6, when the woman — identified only as “B.W.” — was booked into a holding cell after being arrested by Ventnor City Police Department officers, authorities said. Bonanni is a member of the department, but he was not one of the arresting officers.
Instead, Bonanni accessed surveillance videos in which the woman was “in various stages of undress and engaging in a sexual act,” the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s office said. He recorded the clips with his personal cellphone and spread them around, according to investigators.
Bonanni was charged with second-degree official misconduct, second-degree computer theft, and three counts of third-degree invasion of privacy.
“We understand the charges against a Ventnor officer reflect poorly on our department, but they do not depict the department as a whole,” Chief Joseph Wooton told NJ.com.
The Ventnor City Police Department learned about the incident on July 7 and suspended Bonanni afterward, Philadelphia NBC affiliate WCAU reported. The town sits just south of Atlantic City on the Jersey Shore.
