Claire’s announces closure of more than 290 stores, including Icing in Greenbrier Mall

Jewelry retailer Claire’s and its sister brand Icing have announced the closure of more than 290 stores throughout the U.S., including one in Hampton Roads.

The Chicago-based chain stores are known for their piercings and hair and fashion accessories fancied by teens, tweens and young adults.

On Monday, the company filed a list of store closures as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection proceedings. The retailer has been struggling with a high debt load and changing consumer tastes as teen shoppers shift to shopping online. Analysts said the company has also been struggling with higher costs related to tariffs. This is the company’s second bankruptcy in seven years.

The only Hampton Roads store on the closure list is the Icing store at Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake. The Claire’s location in Greenbrier Mall will remain open.

Several other Claire’s locations were listed on the non-closing list: Chesapeake Square Mall in Chesapeake, Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach, Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News and the Premium Outlets in Norfolk and Williamsburg.
