Transportation crews will shut down a portion of Interstate 64 west in Hampton for four hours overnight next week to allow for the installation of overhead signs.

Starting as early as Sept. 3 at 12:01 a.m., depending on weather conditions, the Virginia Department of Transportation will shut down all lanes of I-64 west from the intersection with Settlers Landing Road (exit 267) to the intersection with North Armistead Avenue (exit 265).

The closure will be in place until 4 a.m., according to VDOT, and will take two nights, possibly concluding as early as Sept. 4.

Sept. 5 is a backup date. Detour signs will be in place.

Motorists will see crews putting up single lane closure signs on I-64 as early as 10 p.m. on Sept. 3 leading up to the full closure. I-664 is the recommended route to avoid travel delays, according to VDOT.

The closures are part of the Hampton Roads Express Lane Hampton Segment, which will convert three existing east and westbound lanes along I-64 to one express lane, one part-time express lane, and two general lanes in each direction.

The Hampton Segment is part of the continuous, 45-mile, high-occupancy, toll Express Lane network on I-64 that will run from west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake.
