Democrats are in tough shape.
They have lost the huge following that gave them an edge in past elections. They must recapture public confidence in their ability to provide enlightened leadership without going “full Bernie,” which is toxic.
That’s the lesson of the 2024 election.
Some blame voters who were stupid enough to vote for Trump again, but maybe Democrats were stupid to let that happen. Some assume Trump will fall flat on his face and that congressional Republicans will go down with the ship, allowing Democrats to “back into” victory in the 2026 midterms.
The inscrutable irony is what Trump has brought about: a country hurtling toward insolvency. That is what makes this truth so ugly. Democrats need to retool, and the time is now.

Utterly disgusting
If the destruction of your homeland and its values is overshadowed by the cost of eggs, you are not an American that I’m happy to co-exist with.
My “I’ve had enough” point came when Donald Trump claimed that John McCain was not a hero. He was — not because he was shot down, but because of his insistence that every other P.O.W. be treated the same.
I am surer than ever that a country founded on doing what is right for others will choose to be remembered for doing so. But there’s no Moses to lead us to the Promised Land — not yet.
One thing you can count on is that it is not Donald J. Trump, who rejects every aspect of good sense and fair judgment. How utterly disgusting you who believe in him have become, and it is about time someone told you so. We are well past the point of simple political differences; it’s now between good and evil.

Putin gets his way
Just before Vladimir Putin received the red-carpet treatment in Alaska from President Trump, he ordered the most vicious bombing of Ukraine to date.
Putin knows America has a weak president. Shortly after their meeting, he confirmed it when he bombed an American factory in western Ukraine. Good puppy!
Now punish American citizens some more. Once again, Trump folded like a taco. Good puppy!

The sanctity of life
The recent op-ed article by Thomas Nagle on Florida’s double standard in the right of medical aid in dying is misleading.
Let it be known, our hospice agencies diligently try to prevent suffering and are quite generous in administering narcoleptics and analgesics.
In Canada, 5% of deaths are now attributed to medical aid in dying; most is attributable to depression. In the U.S., half of all firearm-related deaths are suicides. Perhaps it should lead Canada and the U.S. to investigate a cultural mindset so depraved that one wants to commit suicide even when faced with a potentially treatable disease.
The American Medical Association has embraced the position that life is sacrosanct and doctors would betray their fidelity to patients by assisting in the casual termination of life. As doctors, our goals of relieving pain, curing disease and sustaining life remain immutable. A terminal patient in severe pain should be aggressively treated, even if it could hasten their death.
Comparing that to high-stakes poker and strip clubs where adults have the “freedom to choose” demeans the gravity of the issue.
