The Hurricanes caught the eye of the college football world with their primetime win over Notre Dame on Sunday night.
AP poll voters rewarded Miami for its 27-24 win by moving UM from No. 10 to No. 5 in this week’s poll. UM also moved up to No. 5 in the FWAA-NFF Super 16 poll and No. 7 in the coaches poll.
The Hurricanes earned a similarly high spot last year, getting ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP poll last season.
Three of UM’s future opponents are ranked this week, including a pair of big rivals. Florida started the season ranked 15th. After beating FCS Long Island University 55-0, the Gators moved to No. 13.
The bigger jump was Florida State, which pulled off arguably the biggest upset of the weekend by beating then-No. 8 Alabama 31-17. The Seminoles went from unranked to No. 14.
SMU is also ranked 17th. Three other future Miami oppopnents received votes in the poll: Louisville received 59 votes, USF received 25 votes and Pittsburgh received two votes.

Bain earns weekly honor
Hurricanes defensive lineman Rueben Bain Jr. was the first Miami player to earn conference honors this season. The third-year edge rusher was voted ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week on Tuesday.
Bain had six tackles, half a sack and an interception in the Hurricanes’ victory over Notre Dame. Pro Football Focus gave him a 92.6 defensive grade for the game, which was sixth in the nation among defensive linemen in Week 1.
Beck earns spot on Great 8
UM quarterback Carson Beck was picked for the Davey O’Brien Great 8 quarterbacks of the week for his performance against the Fighting Irish.
Beck completed 20 of 31 passes for 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Miami’s win. Pro Football Focus gave Beck a 64.6 offensive grade with a 65 passing grade.
