Hampton Roads Greenbook launches Black September to showcase restaurants

Here’s something to remember in September.

Hampton Roads Greenbook has launched Black September, a monthlong campaign to encourage people to patronize three featured restaurants in each city.

It so happens this month coincides with the one-year anniversary for the local Greenbook, a website and mobile app that spotlights Black-owned businesses. And the event aligns with Greenbook’s mission to increase the number of resources circulating in the Black community and showcase small businesses in the region.

Seko Varner, founder of the Greenbook, selected some of his favorite restaurants and places he’s eager to try from the directory — a total of 24. Diners are urged to leave a review on the eatery’s Greenbook profile page after their visit.

“We can make Hampton Roads a foodie hub by documenting the good food we have here,” he said.

His picks for the first Black September:

Chesapeake: Cutlass Grille, Toastique, Krave Juice & Smoothie Cafe
Hampton George Restaurant, Coasters Beach Grill, Mango Mangeaux
Newport News: Vegan Kartel, East End Cafe, Mystic Jamaica Restaurant
Norfolk: Major Phillie Cheesesteaks, Brothers Restaurant, 350 Grace
Portsmouth: Beyond Vegan Cell Food, YaadVybz Bikkle, Victory River Bistro
Suffolk: Rennee’s Restaurant and Lounge, Sugar Mama’s BakeShoppe, A Taste of Everything
Virginia Beach: Bilu’s Colombian, Ibis Cuisine, Happy Cafe
Williamsburg: Tipsy Beans Cafe, Hibachi Buddha, Southern Pancake & Waffle House
