Friday Night Highlights: Marcus Chapman, No. 11 Crabbers outlast Lake Taylor

NORFOLK — Marcus Chapman and the Hampton offense were in top form Friday night, and the 11th-ranked Crabbers needed that excellence to hold off Lake Taylor 40-34 at the Titans’ stadium.

Chapman ran for 186 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, and he threw for two TDs and 255 yards on 14-of-25 accuracy despite an interception.

Hampton coach Woodrow Wilson said of Chapman, “He’s growing up and he’s really competing now, and he’s beginning to understand the game. He reads defenses and he’s a hard worker. That’s what I love about him.”

Keon Johnson ran for all three first-half Lake Taylor touchdowns in a game that was tied at 21 at halftime. He carries eight times for 66 yards, but because of an injury, trainers wouldn’t clear him for much of the second half.

Lake Taylor’s Latavion Hill blocked an Abraham Taft punt, setting up one of Johnson’s scores.

Jeremiah Ferebee led Lake Taylor with 119 yards on 14 carries, and quarterback/kicker/punter Kevin Adams had 15 carries for 57 yards, though he passed for just 31.

Chapman’s 86-yard and 10-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter helped give the Crabbers a 34-21 lead.

Lake Taylor sandwiched two TDs around a Hampton touchdown catch by Abraham Taft, pulling the Titans within six with more than five minutes remaining. But a pair of offside penalties, including on third-and-1 at the Hampton 22, helped the Crabbers run out the clock.

2-point conversion lifts Churchland past Bethel in OT

PORTSMOUTH — A penalty on Bethel tempted Churchland to go for a two-point conversion and the victory Friday night in overtime, and the Truckers delivered for a 29-28 home victory.

After Floyd Logan V caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Logan Wynne to narrow the Bruins’ lead to one point, Churchland sent out kicker Makai Williams, who had been 3 for 3 on extra-point tries.

But when the Bruins jumped offside, moving the ball from the 3 to inside the 2-yard line, Churchland coach Dontrell Leonard changed his mind.

“I’m definitely gonna roll the dice from that distance,” he said.

The tactic worked as Keith Williams ran between the tackles and got over the goal line, setting off a Churchland celebration.

The loss spoiled a big game for Bethel’s Amari Pryear. The Hampton University recruit ran for 127 yards and all three Bruins regulation touchdowns on 22 carries.

Quarterback Andrew Lewis gained 125 yards on 19 rushes, many of them run-pass options. They helped set up Pryear’s 15-yard TD run and Omar Ndione’s third of four PATs, which tied the score.

Churchland’s Logan Wynne completed 17 of 22 throws for 274 yards and two TDs — both to Floyd Logan V, who had six catches for 204 yards.

Wynne said his chemistry with Floyd Logan “gets better every day.”

Churchland’s A.J. Hayes had 109 yards on 16 rushes, and Keith Williams had 80 yards on 21 carries.

No. 10 Lafayette downs Warhill

JAMES CITY — A week after dismantling Grafton, the Warhill Lions were dealt a toxic shot of reality, losing to perennial Bay Rivers District powerhouse Lafayette 24-6 at Wanner Stadium.

Lafayette gained a 14-0 lead in the first eight minutes but struggled for the rest of the first half. While the Rams gained 210 yards on the ground, their brutal running attack took its best shape on the final drive of the half as Breon Stokes (14 carries, 97 yards) rushed five times for 42 yards, setting up a 3-yard rushing score by Izaiyah Gray.

The Lions had a chance to even the game, marching to the Rams’ 27 midway through the second quarter while trailing 14-6. The Lafayette defense held tough, holding Warhill to three incomplete passes and regaining possession. The Rams’ ensuing drive covered 55 yards, but Aidan Gerda’s 35-yard field-goal attempt turned into an incomplete pass right back to the kicker after an errant snap.

Gerda would provide a 40-yarder in the third quarter to nudge the Rams to an 11-point lead. Two Jael Love interceptions kept the Lions at bay in the third quarter, while Warhill’s Elijah White picked off a pass and scored on a 25-yard pass from Carson Strickland to put Warhill on the board. White weaved through four Lafayette defenders for the score.

The game was evenly matched in the first half, with the difference being a 67-yard pass from Talen Leach to Cyler Brooks. Stokes added a 10-yard rushing TD on a jet sweep to the left to complete the first-quarter scoring.

Brown, Bayside overcome No. 14 Cox

VIRGINIA BEACH — Bayside defeated No. 14 Cox 27-13 as junior tailback Kyron Brown torched the Falcons’ defense for 189 rushing yards and two scores for the host victors.

“I’m going to thank my O-line — they come first every day, and I’m blessed to have them,” Brown said.

Cox (1-1) opened the game with a 17-play drive, culminating in a 32-yard field goal by Brycen Widhalm. Cox was focused on controlling the clock with a ball-control offense, chewing more than nine minutes.

Early in the second quarter, a Cox drive stalled near midfield and the Falcons pinned Bayside (2-0) on the 9-yard line with a punt. On the ensuing play, Brown broke off a 91-yard scoring scamper up the middle.

“My line just opened the hole up for me, and it was there all the way,” Brown said. “They did their job, and I finished it.”

Cox answered back with a 10-play drive capped by a 6-yard TD rush by Jiwan Mack with a little more than a minute until the halftime break.

The Marlins again answered with another big play to take the lead for good, 13-10. Quarterback Kam Kirby connected with Breon Hardnett on an 80-yard touchdown strike.

Brown scored again on a 28-yard rush midway through the third quarter to push the Marlins’ lead to 20-10, but Widhalm booted a 51-yard field goal with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth to get Cox within a score.

Kirby dashed around the right side 17 yards for a Bayside touchdown, extending the lead to its final margin. That run punctuated a seven-play drive for the Marlins, who rolled for 187 second-half rushing yards and 294 total.

Cox drove down to the Marlins’ 10 in the final minutes, but Brown snagged an errant pass from Braden Herron to seal the victory.

“When he started the play, I saw him roll out and signal to his teammate to go into the end zone,” Brown said. “I saw his teammate, came down like I do in practice and caught the pick. It was game over after that, and we got our win.”

No. 1 Maury edges Varina

A week after suffering a rare loss, No. 1 Maury rallied in the fourth quarter to avoid another.

Trailing by six at James Dawkins Stadium, the Commodores stopped Varina on fourth down near midfield before Jahvon Wiggins quickly turned a short pass into a 52-yard touchdown. The extra-point kick went through the uprights, and Maury (1-1) held on to win 14-13 against the team ranked No. 1 in the Richmond area by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Commodores defensive back Javonti Hughes returned a first-half Varina fumble 55 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead. The Blue Devils pulled even just before halftime on Darren Williams’ 19-yard run.

Varina (1-1) went ahead 13-7 in the third quarter, but a missed PAT proved costly to the Blue Devils, last season’s state Class 4 runner-up to Phoebus.

After Maury went ahead, the Commodores made a stop and drove inside Varina’s 10-yard line, kneeling to run out the clock. It was a nice turnabout for the Commodores from the previous week’s 24-20 loss to Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh, North Carolina.

No. 12 Kempsville dominates on defense

Kempsville’s defense was in elite form during a 56-0 home victory over Princess Anne in a Beach District game.

The 12th-ranked Chiefs were swarming to the ball all night, pressuring the quarterback and running backs. Kempsville scored two defensive touchdowns as Nari Turner returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown and the defense returned a fumble 3 yards for a touchdown.

Tayshaun Johnson had touchdown runs of 32 and 15 yards. Rob Hughes had touchdown runs of 8 and 26 yards.

Booker T. (0-2) scored a touchdown to start overtime, but a tackle by the Hurricanes’ Elijah Brown denied them on the two-point conversion. Rayshawn Pierce-Malone’s 5-yard touchdown run for Heritage tied the score before Mombreno-Torres kicked the PAT to win it.

“We had some key players out and had to rely on ninth-graders, but we kept fighting,” Wright said. “The biggest thing is that they didn’t give up. I see them coming together, fighting and playing as a team.”

Woodside 42, Grassfield 14: Wolverines quarterback Terris Bowen scored a touchdown running, passing and returning a punt to lead the season-opening victory. Jaylen Campbell had four pass breakups and numerous tackles to spark the defense.

“It was a little sloppy, but we got a little better today and things are coming around for us,” Woodside coach Alonzo Coley said. “It was good to get that first start (at quarterback) for Terris. He was explosive with the ball in his hands and made good decisions.”

York 42, Grafton 35: The Falcons (1-1) led 28-14 before Grafton (0-2) scored twice in the third quarter to tie it. Anthony Custis followed with a 75 yard touchdown run as the Falcons retook the lead.

Evan Muangkhao had two TD runs for York. After Grafton rallied to within 42-35, Logan Turner, who returned an interception for a TD in the Falcons’ season-opening loss to Poquoson, intercepted a pass to clinch the victory.

“This is a huge win for us because we had to overcome some adversity,” York coach Doug Pereira said. “Every time they punched, we counterpunched. It was a hard-fought game and both teams played their tails off.”
