1 fatally wounded, 1 in custody, 1 flees in officer-involved shooting in Austin

A suspect is in custody and another was fatally wounded overnight following an officer-involved shooting during a burglary  in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, Chicago police said.

Officers responded shortly before 3:45 a.m. Saturday in the 5500 block of West Thomas Street when suspects were seen entering a dark-colored sedan. The sedan fled south on Waller Avenue and officers caught up with the suspects on Chicago and Waller avenues where the sedan intentionally struck two squad vehicles, police said.

An officer who was pinned in a police vehicle discharged his weapon striking one of the suspects. Officers provided life-saving measures but the suspect was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. The second suspect was arrested and taken to an area hospital for unknown injuries, police said. A third suspect fled the scene on foot and officers recovered a firearm discarded by the suspect.

Two officers were taken to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The circumstances leading up to the officer-involved fatal shooting including the use of force was being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
