Brady Olson completed 15 of 21 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns as Central Connecticut State defeated American International 34-7 in its home opener on Saturday in New Britain.
For the Blue Devils (1-1), bouncing back from a season-opening loss to UConn, it was their third consecutive win in the home opener.
The Central defense led the way with five sacks and allowed only 200 total yards to the Yellowjackets (0-1).
Donny Marcus had touchdowns rushing and receiving for CCSU with a 1-yard run and a 54-yard scoring reception. Davon Smith added a rushing TD on a 5-yard run. and Michael Trovarelli had a 1-yard scoring reception.
Mercyhurst 48, New Haven 14: At Erie, Pa., Brian Trobel rushed for three touchdowns, Adam Urena passed for two in the win. Trobel rushed for 114 yards on nine carries. Urena was 22-of-28 passing for 344 yards. Dylan Evans had eight catches for 165 yards and a score. Ashton Wilson also had a TD catch and Ayron Rodriguez a rushing score.
AJ Duffy was 18-of-35 passing for 183 yards with a touchdown pass to Kevonne Wilder and an interception for the Chargers (0-2). Duffy also ran for a score. Wilder had five catches for 90 yards. This is New Haven’s first season in Division I and the Northeast Conference but the game didn’t count in the conference standings.
Lehigh 28, Sacred Heart 10: At Bethlehem, Pa., Luke Yoder ran for 127 yards and was one of four Lehigh players to score a rushing touchdown in the Mountain Hawks’ victory.
Lehigh scored the last 21 points of the first half to take a 21-7 lead. All three of those touchdowns came on the ground, with Yoder going 28 yards, Jaden Green 10 yards and Hayden Johnson 20 yards.
Sacred Heart’s Dean Hangey returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, but the Pioneers (1-1) managed only 177 yards and a 32-yard field goal by Matt King on offense. Sacred Heart’s only touchdown on offense so far this season came in a 12-7 win over Stonehill on Aug. 30.
