Not another street renaming for Trump | Letters to the editor

As one who travels near Sea Grape Drive in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea almost daily, I strongly oppose the city resolution to co-designate it as “President Donald J. Trump Drive.”

The area is heavily traveled by tourists and residents, with restaurants and hotels catering to people of all political persuasions. A politically charged street name could alienate visitors and create an unwelcome atmosphere for guests who come here to enjoy our beautiful coastal community.

Our community benefits from maintaining non-political street names that reflect our coastal character and natural beauty.

Sea Grape Drive perfectly captures the essence of our seaside town, with its reference to native sea grape plants that line our beach and define our unique landscape. This name speaks to residents and visitors alike, regardless of political views.

Street naming should unite our diverse community, rather than introduce political divisions into our daily lives. Residents driving to work or tourists seeking directions shouldn’t be confronted with partisan messaging.

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea town commissioner Richard DeNapoli is a strong supporter of President Trump.

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has always been a welcoming destination for visitors and residents of all backgrounds. Let’s keep our street names reflective of our natural heritage, rather than partisan politics. I urge the town commission to reconsider this resolution.

Arlene Marcus, Fort Lauderdale

(Editor’s Note: The Trump co-designation will be discussed at a town commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10).

It’s not the same Florida

Florida, where to start?

I moved here 45 years ago from Connecticut for the weather. I’ve grown up here, from a 30-year-old mother of two to a senior citizen. The current climate (politically, not the weather) is stifling. I choke when I hear “Free Florida.”

I’m free to contract childhood diseases that were erased in my children’s youth. I’m free to decide what another woman wants to do with her fetus that is not viable or cannot be supported. I’m free to vote for whomever I want — as long as it’s the governor’s buddy.

I’ve watched an incredible public university system shredded for political cronyism and K-12 public education gutted for charter schools (another name for political business partners). I’ve seen my pocketbook raided by our governor for self-aggrandizement when sending planes to move immigrants from another state. He used our money to create a detention center to look good in Trump’s eyes.

I taught elementary school for 30 years in Broward. I made the minimum, compared to friends in other states, but was paid in “sunshine,” as we were told. I stuck it out because I do love the sunshine and what Florida was: a multicultural microcosm of the world.

I look forward to getting back to sanity.

A total travesty

Sales tax breaks to buy guns and ammunition in Florida. Elimination of childhood vaccine mandates. No more fluoride in our drinking water.

Well, now we can look forward to more deaths by guns, more children and adults dying because of no clear mandates on vaccines, and our kids getting more cavities.

Ask Gov. Ron DeSantis if his own children got the required vaccines (I think I know the answer).

Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo and HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. are a danger to our welfare. Both should be fired. Our governor is equally responsible for this travesty.

To ‘own the libs’

Regarding ending childhood vaccine mandates in Florida, how much will my health insurance premiums increase?

How much will it cost me to get a COVID booster, as a 62-year-old? What is this circus performance for the MAGA crowd going to cost Floridians in terms of money and lives? Have any scientific studies been done to estimate all of this?

Of course not. All that matters is owning the libs.
