Portsmouth named a boulevard after hometown hip-hop hero Missy Elliott in 2022. And now, Virginia Beach is set to similarly honor Virginia native and international music star Timbaland.
City Councilman Cal “Cash” Jackson-Green said City Council is expected to vote Oct. 7 to bestow a Virginia Beach roadway, Bridle Creek Boulevard, with a new honoree title: Timbaland Way.
Bridle Creek Boulevard, off Lynnhaven Parkway in the Salem area, will not lose its official name, Jackson-Green explained. However, if the vote goes as planned, “Timbaland Way” will be added to its street signs.
An unveiling ceremony is expected to take place at Salem High School on Oct. 18 when Timbaland will also be gifted a key to the city, Jackson-Green confirmed.
The city plans to host a three-day celebration, “Timbaland Way Weekend,” surrounding the ceremony Oct. 17-19.
Timbaland, born Timothy Mosley, graduated from Salem High. The artist and super-producer is famous for collaborating with Elliott on hit songs such as “Work It” and “Get Ur Freak On.” Mosley started DJing during high school and was in a performance collective called S.B.I. (Surrounded By Idiots) with fellow Virginia Beach native, artist and producer Pharrell Williams before their careers took off.
Timbaland is a four-time Grammy winner, having received 21 nominations for his work with Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and other artists.
The October festivities are slated to include a block party and private and ticketed events. A spokesperson for the event organizers, Stephanie L. Sutton, said celebrity appearances are expected throughout the weekend and that many of the celebratory shindigs will be free and open to the public. More information about exact times and locations is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
The weekend event organizers’ Tuesday announcement included a list of events:
Oct. 17:
Timbaland will speak with students at College Park Elementary and Salem middle and high schools. The meet-and-greets will be private events.
He will appear at a private poolside that will be exclusive to “select creators and producers.”
The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art plans to host a ticketed affair bringing together local leaders, creatives and influencers. A select number of tickets is expected to go on sale Friday at the coming website timbalandway.com.
A private late night event will showcase the fusion of art and music in Timbaland’s career. Select tickets are expected to be available for purchase.
Oct. 18:
A public unveiling of the honorarily renamed Timbaland Way will take place in Virginia Beach.
The public can watch a parade through the streets of Salem that will feature music, performances and special tributes.

The Coastal Edge Block Party, free and open to the public, will feature live performances, local food vendors and family-friendly fun.
A concert, “The Timbaland and The Hitmakers Celebration,” is scheduled for 8 p.m. at The NorVa in Norfolk. General admission tickets, $90, are on sale.
