After 52 years of service, TRADOC to inactivate under new Army reorganization

NEWPORT NEWS — The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command will inactivate on Sept. 26 after 52 years of service.

The move comes after the Army announced in May plans to relocate TRADOC headquarters from Fort Eustis to Austin, Texas to create a new Army Transformation and Training Command. The reorganization is part of a Department of Defense initiative to consolidate several bases around the country to create the new command hub to help make a more efficient and lethal Army, according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

TRADOC has trained military personnel since 1973 and has been headquartered at Fort Eustis in Newport News since 2011, where it oversees 32 Army schools and trains more than 750,000 soldiers per year, according to the Army.

Fort Eustis’  Center for Military Training along with TRADOC include nearly 1,000 employees, including roughly 650 civilians that are potentially up for relocation to Austin. However, Army spokesperson Maj. Chris Robinson previously said TRADOC’s inactivation will not be the end of soldiers being trained at Fort Eustis.

There are still no details as to which military personnel could be relocated.

The Army is holding a ceremony marking TRADOC’s inactivation on Sept. 26.
