A new, glorious high school football season has begun, and New Canaan starts where it left off.
The Rams are No. 1 in the first Hartford Courant Top 10 state coaches’ poll of the year after they finished first in the final 2024 poll. They received 10 of 13 first-place votes and are the three-time defending CIAC Class L state champions.
New Canaan returns 12 starters and has been the state’s most dominant high school football program of the 2000s, winning 13 of the school’s 15 state titles since 2001.
Greenwich, the defending Class LL champion, is second and received the other three first-place votes. It, too, has 12 starters back.
Killingly has nineteen starters back from last year’s Class SS championship team and is third, followed by Hand, a longtime fixture in Top 10 polls and state finals.
Darien, Staples and defending Class M champion St. Joseph are fifth-through-seventh, respectively. They, along with New Canaan and Greenwich, give the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference five teams in the Top 10.
The FCIAC has earned that level of respect after winning three of the CIAC’s six playoff divisions last year, the sixth time that a league has won that many titles in one year. It’s also won a state-high 35 CIAC state titles this millennium, followed closely by the Southern Connecticut Conference (30).
To put the FCIAC’s dominance in perspective, the Central Connecticut Conference and Naugatuck Valley League are tied for third with 15 state titles each.
The FCIAC is already off to a hot start. It’s one of seven leagues involved in the Connecticut High School Football Alliance, which schedules non-conference games between teams of comparable size and success, and it went 12-4 in Week 1. That includes going 11-for-11 last Friday.
Windsor, Brookfield and defending Class S champ Ansonia are eighth through 10, respectively.
