With a second place finish in the Gold Division of the Endless Summer Tournament, Kellam placed the highest among local boys volleyball teams and retained their top spot in 757Teamz Top 15.
The Endless Summer is the area’s largest high school volleyball gathering and features 25 boys teams. Eight of nine teams in Division I were from Hampton Roads, and all 16 teams in Division II were from the 757.
In Division I, Kellam fell to Granby in a best-of-three match (25-19, 25-21), but advanced to the final bracket on a tie-breaker before losing to Dornan, of South Carolina.
Granby, which won the Silver Division, moves up to No. 2 in this week’s area poll, while First Colonial (third in Gold), and Kempsville (second to Granby in Silver) occupy the third and fourth spots.
No. 5 Grassfield, which toppled First Colonial 2-1 (13-25, 25-17, 15-12) in a first-round match, saw Caedan Agustin break 1,000 career assists by tallying 18 against the Patriots.
Newcomers this week include Hickory, which topped Granby in a EST pool match and won the Bronze Division and last week won a Southeastern District match over rival Great Bridge; and Norfolk Christian, which went 4-1 and placed second in the boys’ Varsity Division 2 at the EST. On Saturday, Norfolk Christian defeated Green Run, Salem, Manor and Cox as Norfolk Christian’s DJ Howell had 59 assists on the day, and Caleb Clark nailed 35 kills.
Warwick won the Division 2 pool with five wins and won a Peninsula District match against Denbigh.
