Maury survived in overtime last week, defeating Bishop McNamara of Prince George’s County in Maryland, 38-35 on kicker Charles McCoy’s 23-yard field goal.
Now, after perhaps the area’s most challenging three-week slate, the Commodores can take a breath. Maury survived that early stretch with a 2-1 record after a loss to Cardinal Gibbons, of North Carolina, and a victory over Varina in the opening two weeks.
The Commodores enjoy a rest this week before returning to the field for their Eastern District regular-season schedule Sept. 26 against Churchland.
Staffers Sonny Dearth, Jami Frankenberry, Marty O’Brien, Larry Rubama and Sam Saunders and correspondent Jim McGrath voted in the poll. Team, record, first-place votes, total votes and last week’s ranking are included.
