Now is no time to remove vaccine regulations | Letters to the editor

Polio, diphtheria, measles, whooping cough, mumps and tetanus vaccinations are still mandatory in public schools, unless you have a religious exemption.

Only the Florida Legislature can change this.

Give your legislators a call. Tell them not to make any changes.

This is very important. The Biden administration let millions of people come into this country without vaccinations. Now is no time to make any changes.

The other vaccinations, for hepatitis B, varicella (chicken pox), pneumococcal conjugate and hemophilia (flu), should be left to the parent and the child’s physician.

A tale of two tragedies

A young woman was murdered recently on a train in Charlotte, N.C. President Trump called the tragedy a symbol of “the norm” in Democratic-run cities, to justify him sending troops to cities to fight crime.

In another incident in Minneapolis, two children were killed and 17 wounded during a Mass at a Catholic church, where the assailant used an assault weapon.

The first case bolstered an overreach of executive power. The second got mostly lip service, such as calling for prayer.

Pam Bondi should resign

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi violates her oath of office by ignoring the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Matal v. Tam (2017).

The case reaffirmed a core principle of the First Amendment that the government cannot suppress or punish expression “based on its offensive nature or content.”

After the horrific murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, Bondi stated that the Department of Justice would be “cracking down” on hate speech in response to controversial posts on social media and other outlets.

By pandering to the MAGA mentality, Bondi, hoping to distract from the failures of the Trump administration, is undermining our democratic institutions. She damages the legal system’s fundamental principles of honesty and impartiality — and that warrants her resignation.

A master of division

On Sept. 11, a day of national mourning, the president was asked on Fox News how he intends to bring our country together. His response was hyper-partisan and grounded in retribution, as he blamed “the radical left.”

Ben Franklin said the most important trait in a president is moral leadership. Trump has proven time and again that he’s not moral or a leader.

He is a master of division.

He would deny the American people the rights that our democracy promises to all people. He condemns political violence but does not mention attacks on Democrats.

May I remind you of Gabby Giffords, Paul Pelosi, Melissa and Mark Hortman, John and Yvette Hoffman, and governors Josh Shapiro and Gretchen Whitmer. According to Reuters, “most of the deadly attacks have come from the right and substantially from rhetoric in the Trump era.”

Don’t be distracted. That is Trump’s ploy. Americans deserve better. We need answers to the seriously despicable Jeffrey Epstein episode. Powerful and influential people were involved.  Banks, princes, ambassadors, lawyers and presidents are not exempt from scrutiny.

I, for one, accuse some of Epstein’s associates of guilt by association — whether Democrat or Republican. Let us give these women victims the moral support they need and deserve.

By the numbers

From now on, the monthly U.S. jobs numbers will come from a guy who says he’s 6-feet-2 and weighs 215 pounds.
