Open carry will make Florida less safe | Letters to the editor

To say I was horrified by the court ruling in favor of an open carry gun law is an understatement.

If I am in a store or public place surrounded by gun-toting individuals in the future, I will leave it immediately.

Too many idiots owning and bearing guns are already out there. I am sure many others agree with me.

I see bad times coming, and I hope that no children will be victims.

Sandra Ericson, Davie

Not much of a ‘holiday’

Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a Second Amendment sales tax holiday for firearms and ammunition from Sept. 8 through the end of this year.

For four months, he has opened the door for guns to be more accessible and affordable in Florida by making them tax-free. We can expect more guns to fall into the wrong hands.

We also may find more preventable gun tragedies.

The League of Women Voters of Florida noted that the sales tax holiday for guns and ammunition should have also included gun safes and safety locks.

But in truth, public safety has never been part of this governor’s M.O.

Guns: the common denominator

There’s never a reason for violence to be an answer. But when it’s made easier for people to respond to their worst angels, having easy access to guns in a country overrun with them, and  available to almost anybody with the ability to purchase at any moment, it pushes the envelope toward abhorrent behavior.

The murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a friendly college in Utah is a true example of such behavior. The alleged perpetrator, a Utah resident, was aware of every inch of the campus venue and knew precisely where to be and when.

Why people choose this path as a way to speak out is yet to be discovered, as so many on all sides of the aisle have decided to commit heinous crimes instead of using words. Our voices must never be silenced by those who disagree.

A gun-happy governor

Gov. Ron DeSantis supports allowing Floridians to openly carry guns, and the courts agree (“Open carry is ‘law of the state,’ Florida’s attorney general says,” Sun Sentinel).

Part of the governor’s argument is that 46 other states have some form of open carry. But he offers no solutions on how to curb gun violence, ban assault weapons or reduce gun paranoia in Florida.

Imagine a person with an open carry assault weapon grocery shopping with retirees, mothers with children and teenagers around. We obviously have a gun-happy governor. It appears nothing’s going to change in Florida.

Not very conservative

“Open carry” is the gun law of the land, while covering over rainbow intersections.

When I moved here 35 years ago, this was a happy place with not a lot of rules. Republicans were the party of less government in our lives, and they said Democrats were the party of big government.

I have never felt more imposed upon than in the last 10 years with Trump, DeSantis and their minions. Liberal always meant more and conservative meant less, but the government we have now seems awfully big and awfully imposing of its thoughts and desires on all of us. That is not conservative.
