Readers speak: Hold the applause on Revolution Wind and CT

The announcement that the courts have overruled the Trump administration’s efforts to halt the mostly-completed Revolution Wind project has generated widespread praise by Connecticut politicians, media and environmentalists.

Certainly, the attempt to stop an extensively permitted project was a foolish exercise.

However, before everyone basks in the glow of the court decision, a little sober reflection is in order.

According to Governor Lamont and PURA officials, the Revolution Wind project promises to save consumers money, but that claim is absolutely false when actual numbers come into play.

The approximate cost, according to official sources, for Connecticut utilities to purchase power generated by various sources is as follows:

Natural gas generation: $.03 kwh
Nuclear generation: $.049 kwh
Revolution Wind generation: $.0995 kwh

Thus, the cost of Revolution Wind power will be twice the much-maligned Millstone power and three times the cost of natural gas generation power.

It is the consumer who’ll pay this premium for decarbonized power, since the consumer price is the weighted average of all sources.

Undoubtedly, renewable energy will play a key role in the decarbonization of our energy supply, but deceiving the public about its ultimate cost is a scheme.
