Letters: With Trump in office US regains the world’s respect

Trump brings back world’s respect

I am 85 years old; I’ve gone through many elections and was sometimes disappointed with the results. But people accepted the outcome without all this negative reaction we have today.

We just got over four years of watching President Biden stumble and mumble around. All he got was praise. He was an embarrassment to this country, now we’re all paying for his lack of judgement. Now we have all this Donald Trump bashing. He’s brought back the respect from the world that we lost the last four years, and that’s important. I don’t always agree with all his decisions, but he’s my president now. And as my president I will stand behind him. The media, including this newspaper, have done more to divide this country than unite us all. My concern is our children. They must learn to live with the chaos and unrest. They are learning they can break the law without consequences. It is our responsibility as adults to be better examples. At one time we were the United States, now we are the Divided States. God bless us all.

Take money out of politics

We Americans must unite against one of the greatest threats to our self-government: the abusive influence of big money in elections. Republican, Democrat or independent, don’t we all sense something is wrong? The demands of donors are heard loudest over the voices of our community.

James Madison warned in Federalist No. 10 that factions driven by narrow interests could undermine the rights of others and the health of the community. Today, unchecked political spending fuels a faction more powerful than the people themselves.

Fortunately, the Constitution allows amendments. The For Our Freedom Amendment would let Congress and the states set reasonable limits on election spending, returning control to local communities and protecting our elections from the influence of big money.

Senators in Harrisburg are considering SR 126, a resolution that would add Pennsylvania to the 23 states already supporting an amendment to address this issue and keep people, not money, at the center of American democracy.

This is just the start, but you can help by urging our Pennsylvania legislators to pass SR 126. It’s time to protect our elections from big money. To learn more, go to americanpromise.net.

We are not born with hatred

We are not born with hatred — we are all born in the image of God’s love.

In these polarized times, it seems we hear more about things that divide us than things that bring us closer together as Americans.

Yes, we hear stories of how times had been more simple and people really had empathy for one another. What happened along our life’s passage?

Fast forward to our more complex society of progress and innovations amidst our own busy-ness. However, seemingly at times, a loss of compassion and love seem to dominate and we tend to dismiss what really is important in our lives.

On Sept. 22, our Jewish friends celebrated Rosh Hashanah, which is followed by 10 days of penitence concluding with Yom Kippur with praying and fasting for forgiveness of sins.

This event could be an instructive example for all of us.

Life is short — love is timeless!

More clean-energy projects would help cut electricity costs

The rising cost of living is hitting every American, and nowhere is this more true than rising energy costs. Utility bills are relentlessly growing, in fact here in Lehigh County, PPL rates increased by 16% in June.

A big reason why utility rates are increasing is due to the fact that many proposed renewable energy projects have been stalled all across the region by a little-known agency that controls our electricity bill. This entity is known as PJM, and it is hindering the ability to push forward much-needed renewable energy projects; PJM has been slow to approve dozens of renewable energy projects that could increase energy supply and help us move away from dirty, fossil fuel-powered plants, cleaning up our air and protecting our health at the same time.

If all of the renewable energy projects waiting for approval were allowed on the grid, PJM could generate enough additional clean, reliable electricity to power nearly all of the homes affected in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic region.

We need PJM to approve more clean energy projects as soon as possible, for the sake of our wallets and our environment.

Gun census and taxes on firearms needed

“It’s not OK” is all Gov. Shapiro or any of the rest of us can manage to say after the latest gun massacre, this time of police, in our commonwealth. We all know no one will do anything about guns, so why even protest? Still, if nobody will step up to actually physically take control of the millions and millions of guns that devastate this country, can’t we at least maintain a census of guns and gun owners, so we know what is out there? The Sept. 16 newspaper informed us about the “Gruver bomber,” a local man already free on bail on gun charges who allegedly had 10 prohibited guns at his home. If we had a proper census of guns, these weapons might have been made known and confiscated. A census of guns and gun owners through titles for each gun (just like titles for cars) would allow authorities to keep track of these weapons. The next step would be to tax firearms to discourage the buildup of private armories. Such methods would not infringe on anybody’s rights and could side-step constitutional complications. Incidentally, taxation would go some of the way toward defraying the astronomical costs incurred by gun violence.
