No. 4 Green Run overcame an anemic early rushing offense and a 10-point deficit to register a 28-17 victory Friday night at Kempsville.
Charles Jackson ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries for the Stallions (5-0), who have beaten 55 consecutive Beach District opponents.
For 2 1/2 quarters, that streak was in serious jeopardy. Max Clatterbuck’s 27-yard field goal and Tayshaun Johnson’s 4-yard touchdown run gave Kempsville (2-2) a 10-0 halftime lead.
Green Run’s first 18 carries netted negative-10 yards, and the Chiefs were threatening to extend the lead until Zaevion Cleveland intercepted a Luke Ashcraft pass at the Green Run 9.
With 5:51 left in the third quarter, Tristan Williams changed the game’s tone with a physical 16-yard run down the right side, igniting passion on the Green Run sideline. A few plays later, Jackson raced 49 yards for a touchdown on third-and-2 with 4:10 left in the third, and Jonathan Thompkins added his first of four PATs.
Williams, who had 64 yards on 13 rushes, scored the go-ahead TD on a 1-yard run with 7:38 remaining in the game. Corvin Watson then intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown and a 21-10 lead with 5:55 on the clock, and Jackson’s 12-yard TD run then clinched the victory.
Add that up, and it’s three touchdowns in a seven-minute span. But the turning point can be traced to Williams’ run, which set the Stallions on the path to finish with 169 yards on 44 carries.
“Before every good play, I just call out to God and ask Him to train me,” Williams said. “So I just thank God for that. I can’t take credit for that one.”
At halftime, “Everything we had done was on us, so we just had to come out and start another half,” Williams added.
Kempsville’s Camir Croom made 10 catches for 175 yards, including a late 55-yard TD pass from backup Taejon Cason.

Hickory dominates second half in victory
Hunter Gee threw three second-half touchdown passes and Brady Matthews had two touchdown runs as Hickory defeated Chesapeake archrival Great Bridge 37-14 in a Southeastern District game at Great Bridge Middle School.
After a scoreless first quarter where both teams were battling for field position, the Hawks (2-2, 1-2 SED) finally broke through.
Matthews keyed an eight-play drive, aided by a Great Bridge unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, that he capped with a 6-yard run.
“We’re just trusting the process. We knew we were getting some things in the run game and we weren’t executing in the red zone,” Hickory coach Donnell Brown said. “If we just kept working and chipping away, something would work for us.”
Darius Tillman, who keyed the attack for Great Bridge (0-4, 0-3), scored on a 1-yard run on the following possession to tie the game.
Hickory countered, moving the ball downfield and scoring on a 19-yard field goal by Dylan Keiper for a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Gee and the Hawks took over in the second half. The freshman quarterback guided the Hawks downfield with three completions on a six-play, 65-yard drive that ended on a Gee touchdown pass to Chase Rogers.
Great Bridge quickly countered with Tillman breaking off a 59-yard run and Courtney Jackson following it with an 8-yard touchdown run. The two-play drive cut the deficit to 17-14, but the Wildcats’ offense was stifled for the remainder of the game.
“The kids really stepped in,” Brown said. “We challenged the kids to make the opportunities that we had in the first half that we didn’t connect on, and we were able to connect in the second half.”
After both teams had four-and-outs, the Hawks took over at the Wildcats’ 40. Gee hit Evan White for a 30-yard completion and Matthews followed with a 10-yard run.
Gee added a 12-yard touchdown pass to Carson Schuyler and a 3-yard touchdown pass to Chris Singletary for the Hawks’ final scores.
“Our quarterback, young Hunter Gee, played well,” Brown said. “He filled in and took some big-time hits. So I’m proud of him and proud of this team.”

No. 1 Maury clobbers Churchland
The undefeated Churchland Truckers hauled on to Powhatan Field on Friday night with the hopes of knocking off the area’s top-ranked team, Maury, and breaking a 10-year winless streak against the Commodores.
The dream got squashed quickly and thoroughly in a 77-6 rout.
A mere 35 seconds into the game and facing third-and-15 from the Maury 36, quarterback Domo Everette dumped a pass in the flat for receiver Tayshawn Branche, who weaved through the Churchland defense and trucked 64 yards for the opening touchdown. Charlie McCoy’s extra point gave Maury a 7-0 lead.
Maury gained 423 yards in the first half and regained unquestioned control of the Eastern District.
Everette, who entered the game with three TD passes in the first three games, tossed six in the first half as part of a 14-for-18, 303-yard performance that helped to give the home team a 50-point lead heading into the intermission. That half answered any questions about the Commodores’ dominance after a 28-25 triple-overtime win against a midlevel Washington Catholic Athletic Conference team, Bishop McNamara of Maryland.
Everette finished the game with 336 passing yards and seven TD passes, adding a 32-yard score to Jaiden Avery in the third quarter before sitting down.
Branche launched three touchdown passes to Jahvon Wiggins (four receptions, 108 yards).
Churchland (4-1) scored its lone touchdown as Logan Wynne (10 of 15, 123 yards) found Floyd Logan V over the middle for a 45-yard strike.

Glen Allen 47, #9 Hampton 13: The Crabbers stayed close during the first half of their nondistrict game in Henrico County, but Glen Allen was too much in the second half.
Hampton trailed 20-13 at half, then Glen Allen opened the offensive floodgates. The Jaguars moved quickly, scoring twice in the third quarter for 33-13 lead. Glen Allen scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
Hampton (3-2) will return to Peninsula DIstrict action next week against an improved Denbigh team.
#14 Bayside 48, Landstown 33: The Marlins (4-1) had a fight on their hands from the Eagles in a Beach District battle.
Upset-minded Landstown (2-3) led 20-14 at halftime before Bayside took a 27-26 lead in the third quarter and pushed it to 41-27 with three minutes left. The Eagles added another touchdown, but couldn’t get all the way back.
Cox 24, Kellam 7: Tyre Jefferies scored two of the three second-quarter touchdowns for the Falcons (3-2) as they defeated the Knights (2-2) in a Beach District clash. Jefferies scored on runs of 2 and 5 yards.
Cox’s defense was impressive, allowing 188 yards of total offense and minus-12 yards net rushing. The Falcons’ defense also had three interceptions and three sacks.
Tabb 49, Grafton 6: The Tigers (3-2) dominated a York County rivalry Bay Rivers District game at Bailey Field. Khalil Outlaw ran for first-half touchdowns of 27 and 55 yards, and Corbin Eckert threw second-quarter TD passes of 58 and 10 yards, both to Matthew Adams.
Eckert (67 yards), Doja Arizpe (7 yards) and Micah Marbra Jr. (61) yards ran for touchdowns for the Tigers. Outlaw finished with 111 yards ruashing, and Eckert passed for 115.
The Clippers (1-4) trailed 35-0 before scoring the third quarter’s first touchdown.
