Norfolk State squanders lead as Wagner captures first victory

Coach Michael Vick and Norfolk State likely feel like they let another potential victory get away.

Leading by 13 at halftime on New York’s Staten Island, the Spartans (1-4) fell 18-13 to previously winless Wagner. Jordan Barton threw two touchdown passes as the Seahawks (1-4) scored on three consecutive drives in the second half.

Wagner used an interception to set up the first score, a 1-yard run by Andre Hines that capped a 41-yard drive. Then Barton capped two long drives with scoring passes. The first was a big play, connecting with Malik Redd-Hubbard for 62 yards, and the go-ahead touchdown was a 24-yard pass to Johans Bars to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive.

Hines finished with 108 yards on the ground, and Barton had 183 yards on 14-of-23 passing despite two interceptions.

X’Zavion Evans had a 14-yard TD run and Kevon King made a 1-yard plunge to give NSU a 13-0 lead after one quarter. The scores were set up by a fumble recovery on the Wagner 29 and an interception near midfield.

The quarterback shuffle continued for Norfolk State. Starter Otto Kuhns completed 17 of 28 passes for 119 yards, and backup Izzy Carter, who began the year in the starting lineup, was 5 of 9 for 29 yards. Both were intercepted once.

The Seahawks’ Luke Jakubauskas picked off a Carter pass at the Wagner 41 with 5:35 to play. The Seahawks then burned up the clock with 11 plays, taking them to the Spartans’ 7 when time ran out.

James Madison 35, Georgia Southern 10: Curtis Harris-Lopez returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown in rainy Harrisonburg as the Dukes (3-1) dominated the Eagles (2-3) in the Sun Belt opener for both teams.

Harris-Lopez’s sprint gave the Dukes a 21-3 lead. They extended it with Alonza Barnett III’s 17-yard TD pass to Lacota Dippre and Jordan Fuller’s 26-yard TD run.

JMU’s Wayne Knight rushed for a career-high 151 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown. The Dukes rushed for 331 yards, outgaining Georgia Southern 479-192. Trent Hendrick led the JMU defense with 12 tackles, including three sacks.

JC French IV threw for 165 yards with a TD toss for the Eagles.

Methodist 20, Apprentice 19: The Builders (1-3) nearly overcame a 20-point halftime deficit, but they couldn’t convert a PAT after their last touchdown and fell to the Monarchs (1-2) and lost in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

With Apprentice trailing 20-13 and facing fourth-and-goal from the 3, Kendall Hunt found T.K. Petty for a touchdown pass with 18 seconds remaining. But kicker Logan Eastman’s pass on the conversion try went incomplete, leaving Methodist ahead. The Monarchs recovered an onside kick to clinch the victory.

Methodist went ahead 20-0 as Ty Little scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the second quarter after throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Atkinson with 8:13 left in the first quarter. Kenneth Schoene kicked a pair of PATs.

The Builders worked their way back as Hunt and Isaiah Townsend hooked up a 72-yard touchdown with 9:23 to go in the third quarter, though Eastman missed the PAT. Hunt found Petty for a 29-yard score with 10:37 to go in the fourth quarter, and Eastman’s PAT closed the gap to 20-13.

Apprentice’s last touchdown capped a 15-play, 81-yard drive that took 5:12.

Little was 17 for 31 for 232 yards. Hunt was 18 of 32 for 251 yards for three touchdowns but was intercepted three times. Tyreon Taylor paced Apprentice’s rushers with 46 yards on 10 carries.

Richmond 13, Howard 12: Former Western Branch High standout CJ Fraser and Matei Fitz had interceptions to set up fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Spiders (3-2) rallied past the Bison (3-2) at Robins Stadium.

Howard went ahead with Anthony Reagan Jr.’s 52-yard rushing touchdown, a safety and a field goal. But after trailing since early in the second quarter, Richmond took the lead in the span of less than two minutes in the fourth quarter.

Isaiah Dawson ran 42 yards for a touchdown with 11:50 remaining, and Jayden Alsheskie’s PAT made it 12-7. At the 10:17 mark, Ashten Snelsire passed 7 yards to Aziz Foster-Powell for the decisive TD.

Howard kicker Matt Conord, who had a 34-yard field-goal attempt blocked in the first quarter and made a 36-yarder in the second quarter, hit the top of the right upright to miss a 38-yarder for Howard with 3:07 in the fourth quarter. The Spiders ran off almost all of the clock after that.
