Fall antiquing in the Northeast: Top towns, shops and festivals for vintage finds

By Shannon Fromma, Times Union, Albany, N.Y.

Sep. 28—As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, the Northeast transforms into a playground for antique lovers. From sprawling Hudson Valley warehouses to quaint New England towns, fall has become the peak season for hunting for vintage treasures.

Whether you’re drawn to weathered furniture with rich patina, rare collectibles, one-of-a-kind ephemera or simply the thrill of the hunt, the region offers a mix of year-round shops and seasonal fairs that make antiquing feel like a true adventure.

Some towns have earned reputations as vintage meccas, while fall shows bring together hundreds of dealers, turning barns, fairgrounds, and city venues into bustling marketplaces.

In the greater Capital Region, the town of Cold Spring contains a mix of antique stores, boutiques, and galleries, making it an ideal day trip. The city of Hudson has evolved into a vintage lover’s paradise, with a dense concentration of dealers along Warren Street and the standout destination, The Antique Warehouse at 99 S. Front St., a 40,000-square-foot shop billed as “the most unique place to shop for your cottage or castle” and the largest owner-operated antique and vintage store in the Northeast. Meanwhile, Saugerties offers a walkable downtown filled with antique shops, where visitors can hunt for 19th-century farm tables, folk art and more.

Beyond the Hudson Valley, the Northeast is dotted with charming towns and vibrant markets for those eager to continue their hunt for unique treasures. Plan your weekends around these must-visit spots, perhaps centered around one of several upcoming fall antique festivals listed below.

Year-round antiquing destinations

Brimfield, Mass.

Known as the granddaddy of them all, the Brimfield Antique Show is a bucket list destination. While the multiday flea markets run three times a year, typically in summer and early fall, Brimfield itself has a strong antiquing culture year-round. Expect everything from fine European antiques to quirky Americana.

Chester, Vt.

Known as Vermont’s “Antique Capital,” Chester offers a picturesque historic district, the distinctive Stone Village, and a range of antique shops, including the Stone House Antique Center, prized for its extensive selection of vintage treasures.

Woodbury, Conn.

Often called the “Antiques Capital of Connecticut,” Woodbury boasts dozens of shops, many housed in historic buildings. Collectors come here for everything from estate silver to colonial furniture.

Woodstock, Vt.

This charming town is known for its scenic architecture and a thriving antiques scene, including the Vermont Antique Mall in Quechee Gorge, where more than 100 dealers offer a wide array of vintage treasures.

The Berkshires, Mass.

It’s tough to choose just one spot in the rolling hills of Western Massachusetts for antiquing, but Sheffield — with its cluster of shops — is a great place to begin. From there, head north to Great Barrington, then continue to the Berkshire Emporium & Antiques in North Adams, a vast marketplace filled with vintage finds, toys and home furnishings.

Bouckville

This central New York town comes alive each August with the Madison-Bouckville Antique Week, which draws over 2,000 dealers. But even outside festival week in mid-August, Bouckville has plenty of co-ops and shops worth exploring year-round.
