One person injured, family displaced after house fire in West Hartford

One person was injured in a house fire in West Hartford on Monday that displaced a family.

Fire crews responded to a home on Elmhurst Circle at 5:08 a.m. on the report of a structure fire and found heavy smoke coming from the front of the single-family, one-story house, according to Neal Sinatro, deputy chief of the West Hartford Fire Department.

Sinatro said crews found that the fire started in a bedroom and launched an attack to put it out while others searched the home. Crews found that the residents had gotten out before firefighters arrived.

One of the residents suffered a minor injury to one of their extremities and declined to go to a hospital after being evaluated at the scene, Sinatro said. No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters worked to bring the fire under control, knocking it down within a few minutes and officially declaring it under control just after 5:30 a.m., according to Sinatro. The fire damage was contained to the bedroom where it started. The rest of the home sustained “significant” smoke damage, he said.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family of three who were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office.
