How to enjoy National Roller Skating Month in Hampton Roads this October

Yeah sure, of course, October is known for Halloween. But it’s also National Roller Skating Month, and there will be several Hampton Roads happenings to celebrate it.

Roller-skating is coming to Suffolk’s Downtown Festival Park at 215 W. Washington St. through Oct. 30, with the rink open to the public with $5 admission for one-hour sessions for those 13 and older Thursdays through Sundays. Skates are provided, though personal ones are permitted. Accompanied children 12 and under can skate free with registration.

Other events are promoted by the Hampton Roads organization Rollbounce Rollout, which offers roller-skating classes and creates experiences meant to bring together the entire “roller” community of skaters, skateboarders and bikers.

Not only is it great exercise, it’s also good, wholesome fun, said Jackie Wallace, who founded Rollbounce Rollout.

“It really does feel like you’re floating,” she said. “Just gliding.”

Vibez N’ Motion

A pop-up outdoor skate rink with a 1970s theme, organized with Karma Skate Shop, will be set up at the 10th anniversary ViBe District Block Party from 6-9 p.m. Friday on 18th Street between Cypress and Mediterranean avenues in Virginia Beach.

Rollin’ Through the Decades

There will be multiple ways to celebrate the intersection of music, culture and wheeled forms of transportation on Oct. 17 at the 10th annual Neon Festival. Magazine Lane, an alleyway in downtown Norfolk, will host:

The Pinkout

An event for breast cancer awareness will feature a pink pop-up rink and DJ and a free class by a celebrity roller-skating instructor from 2-6 p.m. Oct. 19 at FR8 House Coffee in Norfolk’s Railyard at Lamberts Point.
