A company that makes corrugated containers is closing its plant in Upper Macungie Township, affecting 60 workers.
A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification was issued Wednesday for Packaging Corp. of America’s facilities at 7451 and 7620 Cetronia Road near Trexlertown.
The WARN notice goes into effect Dec. 1. Federal law requires employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of a closing or mass layoff.
Representatives from Illinois-based Packaging Corp. were not immediately available for comment.
This is the second time in the past six years the company has laid off workers in the Lehigh Valley. In 2019, it shed an unspecified amount of workers at a plant in east Allentown.
The local plants were formerly known as Tenneco Packaging Inc. until 1995, when its name was changed to Packaging Corp.
Regionally, Packaging Corp. also has plants in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County and Hackettstown, New Jersey.
Packaging Corp., which is on the Fortune 500 list, is publicly traded. Shares were down 3% to $214.85 on Wednesday.
