Car dealer, Anderson Humane hosting adoption event

Brilliance Subaru of Elgin and Anderson Humane will hold their 5th annual “The Road Home” mega adoption event from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the auto dealership, 1500 N. Randall Road.

With this year’s event, Anderson Humane expects to reach its 1,000th adoption, according to a news release. To celebrate the achievement, Subaru has pledged to donate a 2023 Ford Transit 250 to the South Elgin-based animal shelter.

“This generous donation couldn’t come at a better time. Our old van was becoming risky to use for long-distance rescues, and this gift ensures we can continue saving lives well into the future,” Dean Daubert, president and CEO of Anderson Humane, said in the release.

During the event, adoption fees will be reduced by 50% for adult dogs, 25% for puppies under six months and 25% for kittens. If someone adopts two kittens, one adoption fee will be waived.

Former pastor of St. Laurence in Elgin dies at age 87

The Rev. Joseph Kulak, pastor of St. Laurence Catholic Church in Elgin from 1995 to 2010, died Friday, Sept. 19, at age 87 while under hospice care in La Grange.

A Chicago native, Kulak was ordained in 1966 and served in various capacities in parishes throughout the Diocese of Rockford, including St. Rita of Cascia in Aurora, St. Mary in McHenry, St. Mary in DeKalb and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Crystal Lake, according to his online obituary. His final assignment before retirement was at St. Laurence.

“I don’t see myself so much as a preacher as I do as a talker,” Kulak told The Courier News in 2007. “I am the same as you. Let’s talk about God and Christ and our relationship to Him.”
