High school football live Week 7: No. 1 Edgewater at Winter Park; Hagerty-Oviedo in big games

This is a light Friday night for high school football, with 19 of the teams in the Orange County Public Schools district taking the night off in observance of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.

But there are some interesting matchups. One being area No. 1 Edgewater (6-0) going to Showalter Field to play No. 15 Winter Park (3-2) in a historic Metro Conference rivalry game.

No. 1 Edgewater (6-0) at No. 15 Winter Park (3-2)

Edgewater is ranked No. 6 in Class 5A by MaxPreps and No. 7 on the FHSAA power rankings list.

The Eagles thumped 7A Winter Park 49-16 last season and have won four in a row and eight of the past 11 meetings between Metro Conference powers.

Winter Park has won three games in a row since losing 52-45 against Berkeley of Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

Week 7 Football Preview: Death of player’s mom hangs over Oviedo squad

Hagerty (3-2) at No. 14 Oviedo (3-2)

Oviedo won 42-28 at Hagerty last year and leads the City of Oviedo Challenge Cup rivalry series 15-3. Hagerty’s only win in the past 14 meetings was 17-10 in 2016.

Both have lost only to Sentinel Super 16 teams this year. Oviedo was beaten by Bishop Moore and Lake Brantley. Hagerty lost to Boone and Lake Mary.

No. 4 The First Academy (4-2) at Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances (4-1)

St. Frances Academy is ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps and is the sixth state team the Royals have faced.

Mainland (4-1) at No. 8 DeLand (5-0)

MaxPreps ranks DeLand No. 5 in 7A; Mainland No. 7 in 5A.

The Buccaneers outscored DeLand 42-29, 42-31 and 55-35 in the past three years and have won 10 of the past 12 against the Bulldogs.

North Miami Beach (3-2) at No. 10 Lake Mary (3-2)

Lake Mary, No. 4 in 7A, routed the Chargers 42-7 at home last year but NMB is improved.

And yes, this is consecutive trips to Lake Mary for NMB – which is known for taking trips to Central Florida schools that can share gate receipts.

No. 13 Ocoee (4-2) at Hudson (1-5)

Playing at home, Ocoee edged the Cobras 22-16 in overtime last year.

Tohopekaliga (3-2) at No. 16 Lake Brantley (5-1)

Lake Brantley is licking its wounds after suffering its first loss, 43-21, to Sanford Seminole last week.

Tohopekaliga topped the Patriots 31-21 last year.

This game showcases two prolific quarterbacks. Brantley sophomore Jackson Stecher has passed for 1,321 yards and 12 touchdowns, and has carried the ball for 6 more scores.

Toho senior Sabby Measick has thrown for 1,764 yards and 20 TDs.
