West Palm Beach police officer injured during shootout while responding to ‘altercation’

A West Palm Beach police officer was hospitalized early Tuesday morning after a call about an altercation turned into a shootout between police and a person inside a home, officials say.

About 2 a.m., officers responded to “reports of an altercation” in the 300 block of Baker Drive, West Palm Beach Police said in a news release.

When they arrived, a person began shooting at them from inside a home, West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo told reporters. The officers returned fire.

A bullet struck one of the officers, and he was taken to the hospital where he remains in stable condition, the release said. The police department did not release further details about the altercation, the officer’s name or any information about a suspect, saying “the investigation remains active and ongoing.”

The West Palm Beach Fraternal Order of Police said in a statement that it “is grateful the officers involved were not gravely injured and will recover. We commend their courage and professionalism in the face of danger.”
