Norfolk State basketball team plans tipoff week festivities

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The Norfolk State men’s basketball program will host a series of events leading up to the start of the season.

The activities begin with Heels and Hoops on Oct. 15, followed by the 12th annual Tipoff Dinner on Oct. 16, the Spartan Madness Fanfest on Oct. 17 and an exhibition game against Elon on Oct. 18.

Heels and Hoops is a clinic that offers women of all experience levels the chance to learn directly from the Spartans’ coaching staff and players.

The Tip-Off Dinner will feature two-time NBA champion and 13-year veteran Vernon Maxwell as the keynote speaker and will be held at Rivers Casino in Portsmouth. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $90 for individuals and $850 for a table of eight. For more details, contact G. The Spartan Madness Fanfest will be held at Echols Hall.

UVA announces times, TV games

The University of Virginia will play 11 men’s basketball games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU in the upcoming season.

The program released its game times and television designations on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers’ home schedule tips off with an exhibition game against Villanova at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24. It will be aired on ACCNX.

UVA’s regular-season opener will be against Rider at home on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. on ACCNX. Its ACC opener will be the Commonwealth Clash on Dec. 31 at Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. on ACC Network.

The Cavaliers will play eight contests on ACC Network and two games on CBS Sports Network.

ODU’s Bisong earns Sun Belt praise

Old Dominion forward Otu Bisong has been named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week.

The freshman from Herndon scored both goals in the Monarchs’ 2-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Friday.

In his first career start, Bisong scored his first goal in the ninth minute of play and found the back of the net again five minutes later on a header to the far post.

ODU (4-4-2, 1-2 Sun Belt) will visit South Carolina on Friday.

Old Dominion women’s soccer player Gry Boe Thrysøe has been selected as the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. The Klarup, Denmark, native made a big impact from her defensive midfield position to lead the Monarchs (7-1-4) to a home win over Troy and a scoreless draw at Coastal Carolina.
Three members of the No. 1 UVA women’s soccer team have been named to the MAC Hermann Trophy midseason watch list: midfielder Lia Godfrey, defender Laney Rouse and goalkeeper Victoria Safradin. The Hermann Trophy is the nation’s highest individual honor, recognizing the national player of the year.

CNU QB picks up national honor

Christopher Newport quarterback Connor Barry has been selected to the National Team of the Week by D3football.com.

The junior from Vienna passed for 434 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a score in the Captains’ 49-41 double-overtime victory over Rowan on Saturday.

Barry has thrown for 17 touchdowns and just one interception in four victories this season.

CNU (4-0) will visit new NJAC member Vermont State-Castleton at noon Saturday.

COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY

CNU stays No. 1

The Christopher Newport field hockey team earned all 19 first-place votes and remained No. 1 in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll.

The Captains (11-0), though, will face a big test when they host No. 3 Salisbury (9-1) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
