New York Knicks guard Malcolm Brogdon, a former University of Virginia star, is retiring from basketball after nine NBA seasons, he told ESPN on Wednesday.
Brogdon, 32, was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2017 and the Sixth Man of the Year in 2016. He played for UVA from 2011-2016 and was ACC Player of the Year his senior season. The school retired his No. 15 jersey on Feb. 20, 2017.
Brogdon, the No. 36 overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft, played three seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, three with the Indiana Pacers and one each with the Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards. He was on track to make the Knicks’ final roster heading into this season.
He finished with career averages of 15.3 points, 4.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds.

UVA’s Elliott makes Bryant list
The University of Virginia’s Tony Elliott was one of 28 college football coaches to be named to the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list.
Elliott has guided the No. 18 Cavaliers to a 5-1 record, their best start since 2017. UVA is also tied for first place in the ACC with Georgia Tech and Duke at 3-0. It is its first 3-0 start in league play since 2007.
The Cavaliers will host Washington State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday on the CW Network. A victory would make them bowl-eligible for the first time since 2021.

Apprentice places 2nd in nationals
Apprentice School climbed three spots in the final round to take second place in this week’s U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association men’s national tournament on the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pennsylvania.
The Builders fired a 315 in the first round, but improved to 304 in the final round for a 619 total, moving from fifth to second. Southern Maine Community College won its first title, finishing at 610 with a 10-over-par 298 in the final round.
First-day leader Maine-Augusta (623), Kent State-Tuscarawas (624) and Penn State York (632) completed the top five.
Apprentice’s Chris Ivey earned second-team All-America honors by tying for tying for ninth at 152 thanks to a second-round 71. Penn State York’s Dillon Yinger won the medal at 143.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
NSU to host Full Court Brunch
The Norfolk State women’s basketball team will host its inaugural Full Court Brunch on Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brothers in downtown Norfolk.
First-year head coach Jermaine Woods and the Spartans encourage fans to come together for a morning of food, music and basketball as the program gets set to tip off the 2025-26 season.

Navy has been picked first in the Patriot League preseason men’s basketball poll. The Midshipmen, who went 15-19 last season, have not made the NCAA Tournament since 1998.
