UCF quarterback Cam Fancher ruled out for West Virginia game

UCF quarterback Cam Fancher has been ruled out for this Saturday’s game against West Virginia, according to the Knights’ player availability report posted late Wednesday night.

Fancher is coming off his second start of the season last week at Cincinnati, where he finished with 333 total yards of offense in a 20-11 loss to the Bearcats.

He previously started the season opener against Jacksonville State on Aug. 28 but left the game in the second quarter after suffering an apparent back injury. He was replaced by Tayven Jackson, who led the Knights to a 17-10 comeback win.

Fancher missed the next three games against North Carolina A&T, North Carolina and Kansas State. He stepped in for an injured Jackson in the fourth quarter of UCF’s 27-20 loss to Kansas on Oct. 4.

Coach Scott Frost indicated on Monday that it would be “all hands on deck” this week as it pertained to the quarterbacks. He later revealed during his weekly radio show on Wednesday that Jackson was healthy heading into Saturday’s contest.

“Cam played a tough game last week, and we think Tayven is healthy now, and we’re trying to get Jacurri [Brown] back healthy, so it’s been a little inconsistent for us,” Frost told Marc Daniels.

Meanwhile, Brown, who missed the past two games with an AC strain, was listed as questionable on the availability report.

Jackson, who has started four games this season, has completed 64.5% of his passes for 906 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception.

With Fancher out and Brown listed as questionable, the backup role could fall to fourth-string quarterback Davi Belfort. Belfort, a spring transfer from Virginia Tech, served as the backup last week at Cincinnati.

Starting tackle Paul Rubelt was also listed as questionable.

Player availability reports can be updated throughout the week, so it’s uncertain if Fancher’s status could improve by the weekend.
