Two goals in the final period gave the South Carolina Stingrays a 2-1 victory over Norfolk before 6,285 at North Charleston Coliseum, dropping the Admirals to 1-1 on their ECHL season-opening trip.
The Admirals will play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Scope against Worcester, starting a two-game, two-night series against the Railers.
Romain Rodzinski, named the night’s No. 1 star, ended a scoreless stalemate in the Stingrays’ home opener with a goal 3:37 into the final period. Ben Hawerchuk doubled the lead 9:46 into the period with another goal for the Stingrays, a Washington Capitals affiliate, who outshot Norfolk 37-21.
The Admirals made it 2-1 when Grant Hebert scored on a power play, assisted by Jaydon Dureau and Justin Young. They pulled goalie Alex Worthington for much of the final minute but couldn’t get the equalizer on winner Mitchell Gibson, who made 20 saves.
Worthington, making his first start for Norfolk, stopped 35 shots.
