Drivers on portions of Route 2 can expect to see some road work later this month.
The work in Colchester will be on Route 2 westbound at the Exit 20 off-ramp to Route 149, which will be closed, and there will be a detour, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
The work will begin on Monday, Oct. 27 and the exit will remain closed for several months while rehabilitation work is done Route 2 westbound bridge over Route 149, also known as Westchester Road.
Also, Route 2 westbound will be reduced to one lane, with traffic shifted towards the median in the area approaching the bridge leading up to and just after Exit 20, according to the DOT.
And, as for that detour, it, luckily, will have traffic control signing patterns to guide motorists.
“Traffic seeking Exit 20 will be detoured to Exit 17 and return to Route 2 via the Exit 17 eastbound on-ramp to take the Exit 20 eastbound off-ramp,” according to the CTDOT.
Route 2 eastbound Exit 20 also will take traffic to Route 149.
According to the DOT, the work includes pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing of the eastbound and westbound Route 2 roadway as well as drainage modifications, safety improvements to upgrade guide rails and bridge improvements between the new Exit 20 and Exit 25 on Route 2 eastbound and westbound.
The overall project will be performed by American Roma JV at a cost of $43,699,900. The work is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 30. 2026.
In a different area, DOT said that the sign and sign support replacement on Interstate 91 and Route 190 in East Windsor, Enfield, Windsor and Windsor Locks began on Sept. 19 with the project expected to be finished on Oct. 1, 2027.
That work includes replacing aluminum signs and supports as well as large overhead and side mounted guide signs, on-ramp entrance signs, and service signs, according to the CTDOT.
There will be lane and shoulder closures on I-91 and Route 190 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic control patterns will guide motorists through the work zone.
Also, on I-291 westbound in South Windsor and Windsor, there will be guard rail upgrades starting on Oct. 27 and is scheduled to be completed on Dec. 31.
This project is being performed by Eagle Fence and Guardrail and work will be performed 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
The CTDOT also said that Wrong Way Detection System activations will take place Vernon, Cromwell, Hartford, Manchester and East Hartford starting on Monday Oct. 20, and will be completed on Thursday Oct. 23.
The system uses video cameras to detect wrong way vehicles.
“If a vehicle is detected, wrong way signs outlined with multiple sets of red lights are activated and begin flashing to alert the driver they are traveling in the wrong direction. Additionally, the system alerts the CTDOT Highway Operations Center and local State Police Troop barracks in real-time, allowing staff to monitor the activities of the wrong way driver on the ramp,” according to the CTDOT.
The locations for this project include I-84 east and westbound at Exit 67 in Vernon, I-84 eastbound at Exit 68 in Vernon, Route 9 southbound at Exit 27, I-84 westbound at Exit 50, I-91 north and southbound at Exit 32B, I-384 eastbound at Exit 1, I-384 westbound at Exit 1B and I-84 east and westbound at Exit 56.
The DOT said for motorists to expect ramp closures at these locations beginning on Monday. Work is scheduled to be done from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Monday through Thursday.
