‘Honk’ at Elmhurst Children’s Theatre

Elmhurst Children’s Theatre presents “Honk!” at 7 p.m. Octy. 24, 2 and 7 p.m. Oct. 25 and 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at Blackhawk Middle School, 250 S. Church St. in Bensenville.

The musical, appropriate for all ages, tells the story of a little duckling who learns how to embrace what makes him special. It’s based on Hans Christian Anderson’s tale of “The Ugly Duckling.”

Triton College seeks plastic bags, volunteers

Need a new use for all of the clean plastic bags that have accumulated? Triton College’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will turn them into homemade mats for the homeless as a service project, and bags can be donated through December.

Bags can be dropped off in the library in the A Building, welcome desk in the B Building and copy machine in the R building on campus, 2000 5th Ave. in River Grove.

RSVP’s Volunteer Fair is set for 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in R-221 in the R Building. Participants will meet with representatives from nonprofit organizations to find ways to volunteer. The fair, which is free, is open to anyone 18 and older.

The grant-funded organization pairs adults 55 and older with volunteer opportunities in the community. Triton College has been a sponsor since 1983 through AmeriCorps Seniors. Details are at 708-456-0300,. Ext. 3606, or via karenmorales@triton.edu.

East Leyden student named commended scholar

East Leyden High School senior Wren Arguezo has been named a commended student in the National Merit Scholarship Program after taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Arguezo was one of 50,000 students across the country to gain that honor. The Leyden HIgh School District 212 board will recognize Arguezo at its Oct. 23 meeting.

Ice rink gets dressed up for Halloween

Fright on Ice takes place 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at RCRC Ice Rink, 415 Lake St. in Oak Park.

The event, presented by the Park District of Oak Park, is a public skate with Halloween-themed music, creative crafts, off-ice games and candy. Festive decorations at the rink will set the stage for a night of surprises and fun. It’s open to all ages.

Rink passholders may attend for free, and skate rental is included in all program fees. The cost is $15 for those who register in advance and $20 at the door. Register at pdop.org.

Burr Ridge center hosts spooky fun event

Boo! Ridge trick-or-treat event is set for 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 throughout Village Center, 701 Village Center Drive in Burr Ridge.

Activities include face painting, live DJ, an inflatable haunted maze and character meet-and-greets with Jac and Sally and Beetlejuice and Lydia. The free event is open to the public.

Adult trivia night planned in Franklin Park

Anyone 18 and older can join a trivia night from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison St. in Franklin Park, courtesy of the Park District of Franklin Park.

The cost per team of up to six people is $40 for residents and $50 for nonresidents. Brain-teasing questions and prizes will be featured. Only the team captain needs to register. Alcoholic beverages will be sold for those 21 and older.
