State Catholic championship

Team scores: Bishop O’Connell 40, Saint John Paul the Great 53, Bishop Ireton 80, Catholic 88, Paul VI Catholic 146, Roanoke Catholic 177, Peninsula Catholic 199, Walsingham Academy 202, Benedictine 259.

Walsingham Academy and Peninsula Catholic co-hosted the event. Catholic’s Joshu Seidensticker, Brandon Eason and Michael Ankley, as well as Walsingham’s Gene O’Hallarn, earned all-state Catholic honors.

Metro Conference championship

The 2025 Metro Conference meet will be hosted by Denbigh Baptist on Friday at 3 p.m. The varsity boys race is the second scheduled race.

The Bulldogs were led by Betsy McCabe with two goals. Allie Tyszko, Sloane Becker, Verity Huddleston, Anja Speers, Mia Jones and Addie Scott all scored once.

#3 Cox 6, Princess Anne 0

Cox’s lone senior, Atalee Booth, finished with four goals and two assists on her Senior Day. Other goal scorers were Campbell Wright and Rose Holland. Wright, Bella Glenn and Lilly Schrott each provided an assist.

#8 First Colonial 7, Landstown 0

The Patriots earned a shutout win on their Senior Day. Ryan Whitworth and Isadora Kitzmiller each finished with two goals and an assist. Elyse Hinkel followed with a goal and an assist, while Ellie Edwards and Lilly Fanzo also scored once. Zoe Mason and Sophie Stroud each contributed one assist.

Nondistrict

Indian River 4, Green Run 0

Senior Zoey Dowdy scored a season-high two goals and added two assists on Senior Night. Sophomores Marlie Voelker and Lily Tyndall added one goal each. Goalkeeper Iyanna Porter earned the shutout.

Metro Conference quarterfinal

Portsmouth Christian 1, Gateway Christian 0

After defeating No. 4 Gateway Christian, No. 5 Portsmouth Christian advances to a Metro Conference semifinal at top-seeded Atlantic Shores Christian on Thursday at 4 p.m.

No. 2 StoneBridge hosts No. 3 Hampton Christian, also Thursday at 4 p.m., in the other semifinal.

The semifinal winners will meet for the championship Saturday at 6 p.m., hosted by Portsmouth Christian.

Nate Brown, Brian Ruzzi and Robbie Marsh combined for 12 kills and 14 blocks. Lucas Hills and Eli Jones led the Patriots’ defense with 20 combined digs.

The Braves defeated the Warriors in four sets.

#10 Grassfield d. #12 Great Bridge, 3-0

Andrew Burke and Isaiah Agustin combined for 28 kills. Caedan Agustin put up 25 assists for the Grizzlies.

The Bruins defeated the Cavaliers in straight sets.

Logan Kennedy provided 15 assists for the Hawks. Carson Tortone and Nolan Kennedy each tallied eight kills, while Cole Carter totaled three kills and three aces.

The Marlins were led by Ethan Barrett with nine aces and 16 kills, and John McClanahan added 12 kills.

Green Run d. Cox, 3-0

Zion Artis-Bruce led the Stallions (10-9) in blocking. Max Wasserzug tallied five aces, and Elijah Delacruz anchored defensively with 13 digs. Green Run travels to No. 5 Kempsville on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Brayden Sasser and Garrett VanHouten combined for 31 kills. Grant Parrish provided 51 assists for the Cavaliers, and Brandon Savoy added 16 digs.

The Wolverines combined for 35 kills and 34 assists. Isaac Williams led with nine kills, and Samere Coleman recorded seven kills and four blocks. Jayden Bruce and Jharen Radovan provided 17 and 12 assists, respectively.

Freshman setter Easton Saunders paced the Packers’ offense with 35 assists, as senior leaders Kaci Humphrey and Chloe Schall recorded 13 and 10 respective kills. Saunders and sophomore Baylee Carriker each tallied five aces.

Makenna Bowman registered 16 digs and seven assists for the Marlins. Ekaterina Smagley added four kills, 22 assists and five aces. Diara Cherry finished with nine kills, four aces and two blocks, while Jhordynn Rowson contributed seven kills and three blocks. Karly Shipe provided eight kills and three aces.

Landstown d. Princess Anne, 3-0

The Eagles defended with 75 digs. Siri Larsen, Kailyn Johnson and Sophia Decker combined for 35 assists. Cheyenne Wright contributed 18 kills.
