Moped rider suffers serious head injuries during collision with minivan in West Haven

A moped rider suffered serious head injuries when he was struck by a minivan that allegedly ran a red light in West Haven on Tuesday, police said.

The crash was reported shortly after 5 p.m. at the intersection of Forest Road and Derby Avenue where emergency crews responded and found that the moped rider had been thrown from the bike, according to Sgt. Scott Allard of the West Haven Police Department.

He was found in the road lying near the curb and was given CPR by a passerby who witnessed the crash, Allard said. The victim was taken to an area hospital with serious head injuries, according to Allard. His condition was not immediately clear.

A preliminary investigation found that the moped rider was headed east on Derby Avenue as he approached the intersection of Forest Road, Allard said. The driver of a minivan who was heading west on Derby Avenue allegedly attempted to turn left onto Forest Road through a red light and struck the moped, according to Allard.

The driver of the minivan stopped and stayed at the scene, Allard said.

The crash remains under investigation.
