Fire official extracts three people from burning home at CT alpaca farm

Three people were extracted from a house fire in Mansfield on Tuesday evening at a farm that raises alpacas.

The fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. at the Khuyay Farm at 441 Warrenville Road where Dep. Chief Kevin Danielson of the Mansfield Fire Department was first on scene and immediately ran in without an air pack, according to Town Manager Ryan Aylesworth.

Danielson, who lives nearby, extracted all three people in the home, Aylesworth said.

“Any structure fire that involves household members on the scene is traumatic, and this is a difficult and tragic event for our community,” Aylesworth said in a statement, adding that officials were not able to immediately provide an update on the condition of the victims.

Firefighters who responded to the home encountered heavy fire conditions. They received mutual aid from the UConn, Willimantic, Willington, Columbia and Ashford Fire Departments.

Paramedics from Willimantic and Rockville provided medical care at the scene and transport assistance, Aylesworth said. The North Windham and South Windham Fire Departments provided station coverage while crews worked to put out the fire.

“Mansfield officials are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from these partner departments,” Aylesworth said.

It was not immediately clear if any farm animals were hurt.

The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Mansfield Fire Marshal and Connecticut State Police, according to Aylesworth. He said officials obtained a warrant to initiate an investigation into the cause of the fire.

“I want to commend the heroic actions of Dep. Chief Danielson and the professionalism of all responding personnel who worked under extremely challenging conditions,” Aylesworth said.
