Kellam, Grassfield girls, Hickory boys race to region cross country championships

The Kellam girls and Hickory boys raced to the Class 5 Region A cross country team championships Saturday at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake.

The Cox girls’ Danielle Maynor (19 minutes, 6.86 seconds) and the Kellam boys’ Finnegan Manny (16:09.88) took first place individually in the 5-kilometer race.

In boys team competition, second-place Kellam and third-place Ocean Lakes joined Hickory in advancing to the state meet.

The state meet for Classes 4, 5 and 6 is set for Nov. 8 on the Oatlands course in Leesburg, in Northern Virginia.

The fastest five finishers not on that trio of teams also advanced to state: Princess Anne’s Michael Nigbur (11th, 16:49.01) and Jonathan Teeling (22nd, 17:08.14), Cox’s Joe McKnew (19th, 17:07.35) and Joe Brown (20th, 17:07.36) and Kempsville’s Kaleo Arrowsmith (21st, 17:07.78).

Among girls, second-place Great Bridge and third-place Princess Anne earned the right to join Kellam at state.

Maynor, Hickory’s Alexis Rice (second, 19:30.03) and Alyssa Bernardo (19th, 21:02.37), First Colonial’s Charlotte Wilkerson (seventh, 20:00.26) and Ocean Lakes’ Eva Wangen (16th, 20:50.51) ran their way to state as individuals.

Class 6 Region A: Grassfield’s girls took first place and its boys were second in this region meet, also Saturday at Bells Mill Park.

The Grizzlies were the only Hampton Roads teams to earn state Class 6 bids. Richmond-area squads took the others.

For girls, Cosby was second and Thomas Dale was third. Among boys, J.R. Tucker was first and Manchester third.

Western Branch’s Gabriel Everett won the boys race in 15:48.02, with Cosby’s Parker Wootten (15:58.77) second and the Grizzlies’ Benjamin Giffing (16:14.04) third.

Landstown’s Adam Matrougui (15th, 17:02.89) joined Everett, Wootten and Thomas Dale teammates Alex Moore and Maddox Byrd in earning individual state berths.

Three 757 girls ran their way to state: Landstown’s Emily Yates (fifth, 20:31.98), Oscar Smith’s Sydney Parris (ninth, 20:44.76) and Western Branch’s Brylie Fischer (17th, 21:39.48).

Thomas Dale’s Maddie Sawyer won the gold medal in 19:35.57, followed by Cosby’s Audrey Martin (19:49.49) with silver and Thomas Dale’s Amelia Coppler (20:04.16) with bronze.

Manchester’s Ellen Addison (seventh, 20:38.69) and J.R. Tucker’s Evie Maddux (13th, 21:12.25) were individual qualifiers.

Boys soccer

Brackets are out for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association tourneys. All three draws comprise 12 teams apiece.

In Division I, two local teams will play first-round matches Friday (Halloween). No. 8 seed Norfolk Academy will host No. 9 Woodberry Forest, while No. 10 Cape Henry Collegiate will go to Northern Virginia to meet No. 7 Episcopal.

In Division II, No. 3 Atlantic Shores Christian drew a first-round bye in the field of 12 and will play a home quarterfinal Nov. 3.

Friday, No. 5 Norfolk Collegiate will be at home against No. 12 North Cross of Roanoke, and No. 7 Hampton Roads Academy will play host to No. 10 Eastern Mennonite of Harrisonburg.

In Division III Friday, No. 6 Walsingham Academy will entertain No. 11 Fishburne Military, and No. 8 StoneBridge will play host to No. 9 Millwood of Chesterfield County.
