Man arrested in connection to 2022 homicide in Newport News

After nearly three years, a man has been arrested in connection to a Newport News homicide.

On the evening of Dec. 7, 2022, officers responded to the 2100 block of Oak Avenue in response to a ShotSpotter activation, according to a release. Officers found 32-year-old James Curtis Jones outside a home in the 1300 block of Hampton Drive with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

After a lengthy investigation which included “technological assets and citizen assistance,” police arrested 33-year-old Michael Tavon Moore on Friday, according to police.

Police said Moore is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and probation violation on felony offense.

“While this arrest does not bring Mr. Jones back, it is my hope that this will help the family as they continue to heal from the loss of their loved one,” NNPD Chief of Police Steve Drew said.
