Norfolk State wasn’t able to snap its losing streak, but the Spartans have proven they can be competitive in the MEAC.
Last week, NSU gave Delaware State — tied for first place in the league — everything it could handle in a 27-20 loss in Philadelphia.
On Saturday, the Spartans did the same against North Carolina Central in a 31-28 loss at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
NSU (1-9, 0-3) dropped its eighth straight, while North Carolina Central (7-3, 2-1) has won two straight and six of seven. The Eagles are a game back of the MEAC’s first-place teams — South Carolina State is tied with Delaware State at the top.
Former Oscar Smith star Kevon King rushed for 149 yards on only eight carries, Vinson Berry came off the bench to throw for two touchdowns and Kam’Ryn Thomas caught six passes for 96 yards and two scores to lead the Spartans. Starting quarterback Otto Kuhns passed for 197 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
X’Zavion Evans accounted for NSU’s other touchdown on a 7-yard run and DreSean Kendrick had six catches for 58 yards and a score.
Norfolk State will host Morgan State in its home finale at noon next Saturday.
