NSU led 20-4 after one quarter and 46-18 at the half, giving coach Jermaine Woods ample opportunity to get his reserves playing time against the Division II Spartans. Two of them, LeAire Nicks and Niyah Gaston, scored nine points apiece.
William & Mary 81, Barton 62: W&M (1-1) defeated Division II Barton at Kaplan Arena for fourth-year coach Erin Dickerson Davis’ 50th victory with the Tribe.
Cassidy Geddes had 16 points, Natalie Fox had 11 points and seven rebounds, Jana Sallman had 11 points and six rebounds, Monet Dance had 10 points and Alexa Mikeska had eight assists, three rebounds and four points. Reserve Dynasti Pierce had eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Tribe shot 47.5% from the field while holding Barton to just above 30%. W&M will play host to No. 24 Richmond on Wednesday night.
Wake Forest 77, Hampton 48: Raven Preston scored 13 points to lead three in double figures for the Demon Deacons, who went on a 14-0 run to move ahead 54-26 with 2:16 left in the third quarter in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Kiki McElrath and Taylor Gibson paced HU with 12 points each.
Virginia 80, Bucknell 35: Kymora Johnson had 23 points, seven assists and five steals as the Cavaliers (2-0) dominated the Bison (0-2) in Charlottesville, outscoring them 26-6 in the first quarter. Tabitha Amanze added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Gabby White had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Virginia Tech 64, Loyola Maryland 48: Carleigh Wenzel had 18 points and six rebounds for the Hokies (2-0) in Blacksburg, and Carys Baker had 17 points and six rebounds. The Greyhounds (0-3), paced by Koi Sims’ 15 points and 13 rebounds, led 16-14 after one quarter, but Tech outscored them 20-10 in the second.
Christopher Newport 64, UC Santa Cruz 54: The Captains (2-0), ranked 20th by d3hoops.com and seventh in the coaches’ poll, beat their conference rivals at the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament in Wilmington, Ohio.
CNU committed just eight turnovers to 24 by the Banana Slugs (1-1). Madison McKenzie scored 15 points and Caitlin Crump 12 for the Captains, who scored 14 straight points in the third quarter to move ahead 44-34.
Apprentice 60, Berkeley 35: Playing in Monaca, Pennsylvania, Apprentice (1-1) jumped to a 22-7 first-quarter lead and won over the Knights from New York. Ronnice Berry had 29 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals, and teammate Cornasia Lamberson grabbed 11 rebounds.
James Madison 87, Queens 38: Kylie Marshall, a transfer from SMU, scored 18 points and Peyton McDaniel had 15 in Harrisonburg as the Dukes (2-1) dispatched the Royals (2-1). Princess Anne High alumna Zakiya Stephenson had eight points, five assists and three steals, and former Lake Taylor star Ashanti Barnes had nine points and six rebounds for JMU.
No. 1 UConn 99, Florida State 67: Azzi Fudd scored 20 of her 23 points in the first half and Sarah Strong added 21 in Storrs as Connecticut won its home opener for the 35th season in a row. Kayleigh Heckel added 12 points and six steals off the bench for UConn (2-0).
FSU (2-1) was led by Sole Williams with 14 points.
No. 5 LSU 118, Georgia Southern 70: Flau’jae Johnson and MiLaysia Fulwiley each scored 19 points to lead the Tigers in a homecoming game for Johnson in Statesboro. The senior from Savannah, Georgia, also had six assists and four rebounds in a game scheduled to give her a chance to play near home.
No. 7 Duke 91, Holy Cross 48: Toby Fournier netted 27 points, Jordan Wood 18 and Ashlon Jackson 15 for the host Blue Devils (1-1), who outscored the Crusaders 28-4 in the second quarter to move ahead 45-16. Holy Cross dropped to 1-1.
No. 8 Tennessee 72, UT Martin 61: Nya Robertson scored 17 for Tennessee (2-1) against the host Skyhawks (0-2) in the Pat Summitt Heritage Classic. The late Summitt, Tennessee’s legendary coach, was a UT Martin graduate.
No. 18 Southern California 69, No. 9 NC State 68: Jazzy Davidson scored 21 points and made the go-ahead layup with 8.2 seconds left in the third-annual Ally-Tip Off in Charlotte. She scored 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting after halftime. NC State (1-1) was powered by Zoe Brooks, who had 24 points and 11 rebounds.
No. 10 Maryland 85, Georgetown 66: Freshman Addi Mack scored 17 of her 23 in the fourth quarter for the Terrapins (3-0) in College Park. They outscored Georgetown 34-9 in the fourth quarter after trailing 57-51. Khia Miller scored 18 for the Hoyas (1-1).
Men
Apprentice 88, Berkeley 86: Playing in Monaca, Pennsylvania, the Builders (1-1) edged the New York-based Knights. Jahlil Hope poured in 27 points on 12-for-15 shooting for Apprentice, while Devon Brown scored 16 and Jabari Brackett 15.
Hope’s layup with 1:18 to go put the Builders ahead to stay, 83-81. He had five assists and five rebounds for a team that hit 37 of 65 field-goal tries (56.9%). Brown grabbed 15 rebounds.
James Madison 84, Coppin State 70: Cliff Davis had 16 points and hit 4 for 11 shots from beyond the arc for the Dukes (2-1) as they won at home. Eddie Ricks III scored 13 points and added three steals, while Preston Fowler, Bradley Douglas and Justin McBride all had 11 points.
Taj Thweatt finished with 18 points and two steals for the Eagles (0-3).
Missouri 106, VMI 68: Despite TJ Johnson’s 31 points and seven rebounds, the Keydets (2-1) fell to the host Tigers (3-0). Missouri’s Mark Mitchell had 24 points and 10 rebounds.
