Norfolk Admirals fall in series opener at Trois-Rivières

Facing a barrage of shots for much of Wednesday night, the Norfolk Admirals lost 5-2 to the Trois-Rivières Lions before 1,512 in the opener of a three-game series at Colisée Vidéotron in Quebec.

It was the fourth consecutive regulation defeat for Norfolk (4-6-2-0).

Admirals goalie Isaac Poulter made 45 saves but still took the loss after facing 50 shots, an exceptionally high total. The Lions (5-4-0-2), who eliminated Norfolk from last year’s playoffs in the North Division finals, netted five consecutive goals.

The Admirals’ Brady Fleurent scored 2:12 into the game off assists from Justin Young and Norfolk native Brandon Osmundson. But at 3:35, Cédric Desruisseaux was credited with the tying goal when a bounce from behind the net slipped past the goal line.

After the Lions killed a 5-on-3 power play, Sean Gulka gave the Montreal Canadiens’ ECHL affiliate the lead to stay with a goal at 14:17 of the first.

Tyler Hylland’s blast made it 3-1 at 7:22 of the second period. Morgan Adams-Moisan (named the game’s No. 1 star) and Anthony Beauregard scored in the third period before Jaydon Dureau gave the Admirals their final goal 5:13 into the third. Goalie Hunter Jones made 20 saves for the victory.

The teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Friday.

It was the Admirals’ first game since they signed Ontario native and former Niagara University forward Johnny Curran, 29, who played five seasons in England’s Elite Ice Hockey League. He started and took one shot.
