The Norfolk Admirals snapped a four-game losing streak Friday night, overcoming the Trois-Rivières Lions 4-2 before 2,357 at Colisée Vidéotron in Quebec.
Goalie Alex Worthington gained his first professional victory in his sixth appearance with the Admirals, stopping 22 shots by the franchise that ousted Norfolk from last year’s ECHL playoffs.
Coming off Wednesday’s win, the Lions (5-5-0-2) took a 1-0 lead when Anthony Beauregard scored just 1:02 into the game. But the Admirals (5-6-2-0) answered almost immediately as Justin McDougall netted a wrist shot 19 seconds later for his first goal of the season.
Chase Yoder, on loan from the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose and named the night’s second star, scored his first pro goal for a 2-1 Norfolk lead. Brandon Osmundson, who grew up in Chesapeake, then scored from the slot for a 3-1 lead.Brandon McNally engaged in a fight before the end of the first period, energizing the Admirals.
Beauregard scored the second period’s only goal at 6:33 on a power play, reducing the Admirals’ edge to 3-2.
But in the third period, Norfolk’s solid penalty kills preserved the lead. When the Lions pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, Brady Fleurent put the puck in an empty net with 39 seconds remaining to clinch the triumph.
The Admirals and Lions will settle the series with a 3 p.m. game Saturday.
