CNU erases second-half deficit to defeat Cairn

Christopher Newport overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to defeat Cairn 89-82 Saturday before 594 at Freeman Center.

The Captains (3-2), ranked ninth in the 3hoops.com preseason poll, have won two in a row after defeats to Randolph-Macon and Catholic, a pair of nationally ranked teams. The Highlanders, from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, fell to 4-2.

CNU trailed 70-61 with 8 1/2 minutes left but went on a 19-1 run to take control. Isaiah Dozier had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Ethan Ward had 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Captains had six double-digit scorers.

Jaylon Simpson paced Cairn with 28 points.

Averett 62, Apprentice 61: A late 7-0 run by the Cougars (3-1) proved decisive as they edged the Builders (3-3) in Danville.

Timayahs Bracey’s 3-pointer with 2:42 remaining put Averett ahead 58-57, and a dunk and layup by Jackson Sellars gave the Cougars a 62-57 lead. Wayne Hedgepath’s layup with 22 seconds left and Jahlil Hope’s layup cut it to 62-61 with 5 seconds left, but Zach Skogen’s steal for Averett just before the final buzzer clinched the victory.

Sellars scored 16 and Bracey 14. Hope had 13 points and Shamon Rosser 12 for Apprentice.

No. 8 Illinois 98, Long Island 58: Andrej Stojakovic scored 20 points for the Illini (5-1) in Champaign. A.J. Neal Jr. had 15 for the Sharks (3-3), who trailed 54-19 at halftime.

Navy 86, New Jersey Institute of Technology 70: Aidan Kehoe poured in 21 points and Austin Benigni had 20 points and four assists as the Midshipmen (3-3) handled the Highlanders (3-3) in Annapolis, Maryland. Jeremy Clayville had 16 points to lead NJIT.
